Dental Implants Types, Procedure and Recovery

Many people ask, what are Dental implants? A dental implant is a surgical component that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge, denture, facial prosthesis or to act as an orthodontic anchor.

What are the different types of dental implants?

Most of the world’s Dental Association considers two types of implants to be safe. They are:

  • Endosteal implants– these are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the post-individually, or grouped on a bridge or denture.
  • Sub-periosteal implants – these consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums. As with endosteal implants, artificial teeth are then mounted to the posts.
  • Miniimplants- Well, although they aren’t quite regarded as a type of implant, they are quite different in a way and it is only fair that they get a special mention. These implants are miniature in size and far smaller than the traditional implants. The orientation and design is almost similar to the traditional implants only that the size of implants is greatly reduced to make them more effective.

What is the procedure for getting an implant?

  • Well the procedure will depend on whether you are receiving a single-tooth replacement or a multiple-tooth replacement but both have the same procedure.
  • In most situations, a 3-D CT scan is used alongside virtual planning software to design the implant placement and the replacement teeth, even before the procedure itself starts.
  • This happens after the initial examination and, if needed, allows for temporary replacement teeth to be ready for you the day of surgery.
  • The procedure the follows;
  1. First, a dentist or his/her assistant will help you feel more comfortable by using a recommended sedation option.
  2. If necessary, a dentist will extract any teeth prior to the implant placement.
  • After those teeth are removed, the dentist will place dental implants in the jaw bone using a gentle surgical technique.
  1. Then the dentist will replacement teeth onto the implants, and you’ll leave the office with teeth, all in one appointment.
  2. In some instances, you and your doctor may decide that a more traditional approach to implant placement is best.
  3. With a traditional procedure, the newly-placed implants will be left undisturbed for a period of several weeks to a few months while the surrounding bone and soft tissue heal.
  • During this bone-remodeling phase, the bone will grow and the tissue will shape around the implants to form a strong biological bond. In the meantime, the dentist will place temporary teeth on the implants so you won’t have to leave the office toothless.

What happens during recovery after the dental implant procedure?

  • Most people who have received dental implants say that there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia can be used during the procedure, and most patients report that implants involve less pain than a tooth removal.
  • After the dental implant, mild soreness can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications, such as Tylenol (Acetaminophen) or Motrin (Ibuprofen), which are painkillers which assist relieve dental pain, fever, headaches or migraines if they arise after the procedure as prescribed by your doctor.
  • But if pain persists you should consult your doctor.

So what is the after care of the dental implant process?

  • Most dental implants are successful, and there are a few steps you can take to help ensure success and make your implant last;
  1. Practice good oral hygiene – brush twice a day and floss once daily. Using interdental brushes, brushes that slide between teeth, can help clean the hard to reach areas around your implant.
  2. Quit smoking – smoking can weaken the bone structure and can contribute to implant failure.
  • Visit your dentist – cleanings and exams every six months can help ensure your implant is in good condition, and that it stays that way.
  1. Avoid chewing on hard foods – don’t chew on hard items such as ice and hard candy because they can break the crown and your natural teeth.
