BLOOD WORK LAS VEGAS: PREPARATION

Tags: blood patient

There comes a time in most people’s lives when Blood work has to be done. Very few people actually enjoy the process of having blood drawn, but in order to ensure the process goes smoothly and results are not affected by external forces, there are some steps that have to be taken beforehand.

Before the Blood Test
The patient should find out as much as possible from their doctor about the test they are about to have done. Why is the test being ordered? Are there any specific instructions?

1. Is Fasting a Requirement?
Many blood tests do not require a blood test, but there are a few exceptions. This is why it is important that the doctor or nurse makes all the instructions clear to the patient beforehand. For some tests, the patient will be instructed to fast (no food or drink) prior to the test. This is what is called a fasting blood test. These are some examples of blood tests that require fasting before the tests:
• Iron Blood Test. These tests are normally taken first thing in the morning before the patient has had anything to eat. The patient should also avoid taking any iron supplements at least 24 hours before the test, as the body absorbs iron from pills quickly and this could raise iron levels and provide false results. This test helps diagnose iron deficiency.
• Fasting Blood Glucose Test. This test is done to determine whether the patient has diabetes, so no food or drink should be consumed at least 8 to 10 hours prior to the test.
For some tests, the patient may be instructed not to eat anything, but this does not mean that the individual should not drink water. Since blood is approximately 50% water, the more water the patient drinks, the plumper the veins become and the easier it is for blood to be drawn.

2. The Patient Must be Honest with the Health Care Practitioner
The patient must inform the doctor or nurse of all medication they are currently taking as certain medications can affect the results of the blood work.
It is also vital that the patient be honest about whether they have followed the instructions given concerning the test.

Advantages of Blood Work in Las Vegas
Although having blood drawn is not necessarily a fun experience, it is an important one.
• Preventing degenerative diseases. Blood screening allows doctors to get a snapshot of the patient’s current state of health. This can help them identify potential health problems at an early stage – allowing treatment to be more efficient.
• Assessing the status of body systems. This includes liver and kidney function, hormone balance, and immune system wellness.

Like all other aspects of medical care, it is important that the patient be honest with their healthcare provider. Providing correct and complete information is crucial in ensuring the correct tests are ordered, the results are accurate, and ultimately the right form of treatment is administered.
