Have you heard about the keto diet? If you have, then you must be aware of Ketosis. In case you do not know about the term, ketosis is the natural state of your Body when you completely fuel it with fat. Apart from when you are on a keto diet, ketosis may also take place when you are fasting. There are several health benefits of ketosis. These are basically involved with faster body weight loss and your overall performance and health. However, there are also certain side effects of ketosis. If you suffer from type 1 diabetes or any other rare situation, excessive ketosis may easily become dangerous for you.

1. About Ketosis

When you talk about ketosis, the first part of the word, “keto”, comes from the word ketones. This is basically the name of the fuel molecules in your body. Ketones are also the alternative fuel option for your body that is produced from the fat consumed. It is used when the blood sugar level in your body goes down. Carbs are the primary source of blood sugar in your body. When you lower the consumption of carbs and have moderate quantity of protein, ketones are automatically produced in your body.

The conversion of fat into ketones takes place in your liver. Once the conversion is complete the ketones enter your blood stream. They are used by the cells of your body as fuel, just like the way glucose is used. The best part about ketones is that it can easily fuel your brain. The human brain is one of the hungriest organs in your body and it cannot be directly fueled by fat.

2. Maximize the Fat Burning Process

There are 2 primary ways to enter into the state of ketosis. The first is by starting a keto diet and the second is by fasting according to this site. Under both these circumstances, once your body’s glucose reserve depletes, it starts depending on the stored fat for fuel. This automatically lowers the level of insulin in your body, which is also a fat storing hormone. At the same time, the fat burning process increases. Your body has easy access to fat stores inside and this allows it to burn the stored fat very easily. This is great news for any of you who wish to shed excess body weight. Studies have also revealed that a keto diet can quicken the pace at which your body loses weight.

Once your body produces enough ketones, which is above 0.5mM, your body is said to be in a state of ketosis. If you fast, it is said that your body gets into a state of ketosis faster. However, it is not possible to fast forever. It is good for you to note that you can easily continue with your well formulated keto diet for as long as you want.

It is said that once you come out of ketosis, your body starts getting fat once again. This is why it is better to continue with a keto diet. Initially, you may feel the urge to have more carbs. However, this feeling will soon fade away.
