Losing weight, building muscle, and various other Fitness Goals that our clients desire aren’t achievable overnight. Fitness professionals, in contrast to most clients, understand that the attainment of fitness goals will not happen overnight. Rather, the client will have to engage in consistent effort over an extended period of time in order to see the results that they are looking for. However, when clients see before and after pictures that are being used as ads for various products, they tend to lose sight of the process and want only quick results. In reality, the majority of clients don’t realize that those transformations require focus, intentional effort, and most importantly—consistency. While this consistency truly is the catalyst for success, most trainers find it difficult to keep their clients consistent with actions needed to deliver exceptional results. Instead of having to beg your clients to do their part, inevitably becoming frustrated with their efforts, and eventually giving up on them—there are 4 simple actions you can take to build confidence and keep each client on the correct trajectory.
1. Turn Their Fitness Goals into a GameRather than making your client’s workout “just another job,” you should turn it into something that is fun to do. The average client isn’t a hardcore fitness enthusiast nor someone who abides by hardcore clichés such as “eat clean, train dirty”, or any of the other millions of quotes circulating around. The average client is training with you because they want to feel better about themselves, have more energy, look better naked, or because their doctor is making them. Therefore, you have an extra hurdle when working with them—making this something that they will actually enjoy. How can you do this? By turning their goals into a game and integrating other metrics to make it more interactive. This is pivotal because your client needs to buy into your program early on in order to believe that you - and they - can get the job done. They’re not going to lose all their weight instantly. Therefore, you need to show them incremental success in other ways and have them focus on goals that are achievable at the beginning.
2. Have Them Make a Vision BoardWhat we focus on expands, either good or bad. When you have your client create their vision board and place it in a popular place in the house, they will see it often. Thus, they’re essentially doing short visualization exercises throughout the day. Olympic athletes have implemented vision boards for decades to improve their performance and it has even been reported that brain patterns triggered during an average lifting session are similarly triggered when an individual visualizes lifting weights. When having your client create a vision board, have them focus on how they want to feel. The external aspect, such as a flat belly, bigger arms, bigger chest, and any other aesthetic attribute, is only a small piece of the picture. Have them put anything that inspires and motivates them onto their board.
3. Change their MindsetAccomplishing a goal starts with mastering control of your mind. While you can’t control external situations and unexpected obstacles that appear, you can control how you react to them. Your thoughts lead into your feelings, which create your actions. Letting your clients be cynical and pessimistic about their fitness creates a toxic environment within their mind. Letting your client “hope and wish” that they lose weight seems fine on the surface. However, this is not equipping them with a champion’s mindset because they’re depowering themselves and giving up control and placing it externally. Anytime you hear your clients recite, “I hope to get my workouts in this week” or “I’ll try to eat healthier”—immediately stop them and change those hopes into an “I will” phrase.
4. Small Milestones Deserve CelebrationsWeight loss is tough, whether it’s 10 pounds or 30 pounds. Most people striving to lose weight won’t acknowledge their successes along the way until the end goal has been accomplished. While focusing on the big prize is important, celebrating small successes along the way is just as crucial. Don’t let your clients fall into the trap of obsessing over the end goal and placing their entire self-worth on their big goal. Celebrating small milestones, even if they seem insignificant, helps build momentum for your clients to continue. Though your client may have a goal to lose 30 pounds, force them to celebrate losing the initial 5 pounds. Celebrating every milestone prevents your client from obsessing over a big goal that will inevitably require time. You will be boosting their self-esteem in the present, thus propelling them to achieve their fitness goals.
