Which hair transplant method is best?

Let’s talk about Hair. Some of us spend almost half of our lives brushing, washing, styling and generally fiddling with our hairs. With hair transplants beginning to take roots in public consciousness, we are here to tell you how does it work and which hair transplant method is the best for you.

Human beings are all covered with hair. Our entire body can grow hair and except our lips, palms and the soles of our feet. The hair differs all over the body, but how they grow is pretty much the same. Just underneath the skin, all bundled together with things like nerves, blood vessels, and sweat glands are our hair Follicles, where individual hairs gradually increase in length, as more cells added to the base over time.

As part of their natural cycle, hair stops growing and fall out of the follicles and gets replaced with new ones. When someone plucks their eyebrows, it is only a short term solution because a follicle can grow new hair. The problems start when the hairs stop coming out, and it is caused due to various things like major trauma to the skin leaving scar tissue without any follicles and without any follicles, we can’t grow hairs.

Another common thing happens with the follicles that they stop working. They are there but just not working anymore. It is because of a hormone called di-hydro-testosterone comes along and interfere with switching them off. There is a type of hair loss called Alopecia that is more often seen in men where the follicles around the hairlines on top of the head and right back to the crown have the particular receptors for particular switch off hormone and gradually stops producing hairs. Once the old hairs fall out, the person gets affected with what’s known as Male Pattern Hair loss. In both of these cases, Hair transplants offer a solution by transplanting not just the hairs but with the healthy follicles into the area that needs them.

Surprisingly, hair transplant treatment kicked off well in the 1950s when doctors have found out that they can remove the hair follicles from a safe area also called as Donor area and successfully install it into the bald part which is called Recipient area.  In the case of Male Pattern Hair loss, there tends to be a safe zone of permanent hair around the back and the side of the head from which the healthy follicles gets extracted. Due to limited technology, the results were not that ideal and effective. With the rise of new technology, Doctors have successfully come up with new methods for Hair Transplantation.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

In today’s world, there are two most popular techniques which doctors and surgeons usually prefer. One of the methods is called the Strip method or Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). It involves removing a thin strip of hairy skin from the safe zone at the back of the head then with a very sharp eye and even sharper scalpel, slicing it up into individual follicles. The follicular units then inserted into small slits of the skin of the bald area and the wound is closed with stitches or staples. This technique does not require a lot of skillful hands for operating, and it leaves a long scar on the back of their head. Also, it is an old technique that doctors used to prefer for the time-saving of the treatment.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

The most popular and widely used method is Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Instead of slicing up the big portion of skin in one go, this method uses a punch tool that looks like a tiny drill to cut almost individual follicular units, leaving the rest. The tiny holes that heal to leave barely perceptible scars. The follicular units from this extraction method are implanted into slits in the bald area just the same as FUT. At this stage, art meets science. It’s the job of surgeon to make sure the hair bends seamlessly and into the existing hair which involves drawing a line over the head using a singular follicular unit to make a finer transition. Then multiple units can be inserted into the holes to give a denser covering. During the session, the procedure can be less painful but usually takes a longer duration as the surgeon handpick the follicles and insert them into the bald area.

So here’s a difference between the two techniques in terms of various factors. (Cost, Duration, Skills, Level of Pain, etc.)

Factors FUT FUE
Cost Less costly More costly
Duration 4 to 5 hours 10 to 12 hours
The requirement of skills Less skillful More skillful
Level of Pain More painful Less Painful
After effects Stitches might Pain No after effects
Time for recovery More time for recovery Lesser recovery time
Level of Effectiveness Less effective More effective

The advantage of FUE technique is that there is no horizontal scar on the back of the head, and there are no sutures. The recovery process is faster, and there is minimal discomfort. You can return to normal daily activity the next day.

We hope that we have provided you with an insight regarding the methods of hair transplant. The choice is yours.
