How you breathe affects the way you think and feel

Breathing is the only function in our bodies, that we do both consciously and unconsciously.

How you breathe affects the way you think and feel

As per Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Pranayam is the training, of the rate of the inhalation and exhalation. That one can easily hold the breath effortlessly. As, retention of breath allows the cessation of thoughts.

Research shows that each emotion is associated with a distinct pattern of breath. Poor breathing patterns are deep-rooted for many of us. After hours, weeks, months and years of piled up negative stress. It becomes entwined in tissues, structures and pure essence of our being.

Though, conscious breathing is the best way to get you back to the present. Observe the breath, slow down the breathing as it stimulates the Vagus nerve and Parasympathetic nervous system.

Today science, supports a link between different types of breathing and activation in brain structures; involved in thinking, feeling and behavior. This shows that particular breathing strategies may be used as a tool to help people to manage their thoughts, moods and experiences.

If we get caught with our thoughts, emotions and reactions, we’re at their mercy. But we have a miraculous ability to observe our own mental and emotional state. This requires us to be present, Breathe and slow down the thoughts. Besides, thoughts are motor responses of the body! Yes, a little awareness, deep breaths and balance of various chemicals; in the body can help you choose your thoughts and emotional state.

Finally, breathing happens automatically. Many of us don’t give the breath as much attention as it deserves. Nor have we learned to harness its full potential to calm our minds. Start with one slow breath at a time….
