8 Questions to ask yourself about your Yoga Practice

1) What motivates you to practice?

Social media, Ego, Trends, Getting to do challenging poses, Mindfulness..? We all like recognition and applause. But, when it is the only factor that builds your practice; Then you need to take a step back and look again..

2) Do you practice too much or too little?

Some of us, spend one or three hours a week on the mat and are unhappy about the results. Then, a couple of us spends up to 21 hours on the mat and complain about aches and soreness. Balance is the key!

3) Does your practice balance the rest of physical exercises in your life?

If you are cycling,running everyday; then you want to strengthen and stretch in your practice. If you are weight lifting then work on stability and mobility. Ensure, that your Yoga Practice balances the physical regime in your life.

4) Does your practice have an influence beyond the mat?

After sitting for long hours, do you do some basic stretches? Have you tried breathing exercises beyond the mat? Do you want yoga to play a role in your life of the mat? Is Yoga a fitness, wellness or therapeutic regime?

Knowing answers to the above question helps you find the right style of yoga. While ensuring your teacher is in sync with your goals.

5) Are you keeping various joints/muscles safe?

Sirshasana, Halasana, Chaturanga dandasana, Chakrasana, etc can be tricky; If not practiced safely. Thus, ensure to use props or asana variations to keep the body safe.

6) Do you require constant guidance in your practice?

Some practitioners need guidance to stay mindful; the others need silence to get into their zone. Try them both and see what works better for you.

7) Are you happy coming on the mat and while getting off the mat?

After your practice, you should feel lighter and more serene. Similarly, getting to the class should not feel like another chore. See what style, what time and which teacher works the best for you.

8) Is your practice helping you in self-development?

Studies show the impact of yoga on the brain, building new patterns, resilience, etc. If you do not see any change, besides the body. Work on the breath, awareness; That you can enjoy the full spectrum of yoga benefits.
