What is Somatic Movement?

In the last week, I came across the word “Somatic movements,” a couple of times. And that’s when, I read more about it and its’ an interesting and a familiar concept.

What is Somatic Movement?

The term Somatic is derived from the Latin word soma, meaning “the living body.” Somatic is an approach to experience the full intelligence of our body.

It involves performing Movement for the sake of movement. Throughout the exercise, you focus on your inner experience as you move and expand your internal awareness.

The aim of Somatics is to do the same movements; with more efficiency. While spending less energy and being more aware of the thoughts, emotions and sensations.

How Somatic Movements help

Somatic Movements prepare us to move better and be more present. They help us in numerous ways. Like:

  • They guide us to sense fully and be more aware of our responses to stimuli.

  • Improves coordination in movements.

  • The process of slow articulate movement calms the central nervous system.  Thereby reducing tension in the muscles; as it brings the body back into homeostasis.

  • In case of injuries; it helps in voluntary movement and using movements to reduce pain.

What is Somatic Movement Therapy?

Somatic practices allows us to access more information about the ways we hold on to your experiences in the body. Somatic experts believe this knowledge, combined with natural movement and touch, can help one work toward healing and wellness.

Example of Somatic Movements:

  • Rolfing
  • Body-Mind Centering
  • Alexander technique
  • Feldenkrais method
  • Laban movement analysis

Some other movements that are somatic in nature are: Tai-chi, Qi gong, Yoga, etc.

Why Yoga is a Somatic Practice

Yoga is known for Neuro Muscular Relearning. That is, asana practice makes new patterns in the mind. While releasing any stiffness from the muscles and in one’s thoughts and actions too.

Yoga offers the practitioner an opportunity to connect with themselves. While being privy to their emotions and thought patterns. Thus, helping us move with more ease and awareness in everyday life.

Remember all the times, your teacher says, be aware of your thoughts, your feelings, self-talk and the quality of your breath. When we want to huff and puff, we focus on taking deep breaths and expanding our awareness. All effortless and coordinated movement give us a sense of wholeness…
