What is NOT Meditation: Part 2

Tags: meditation

Today,  more and more people are looking to find peace of mind. The purpose of Meditation can be to find- peace, happiness, solutions or overall well-being.

But, what is meditation? Like I always say, Meditation is the state of simply being.  Just pure experiencing, with no interference from the body or mind.

What is NOT Meditation

We saw in Part 1 that, intense focus, relaxation, concentration techniques and pranayam is NOT meditation. In continuation, from the frequently asked questions; Let’s have more clarity about Meditation.

Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra is a systematic relaxation technique which requires focus. The practice taps into the sub-conscious mind. Whereas, in meditation, we do not project our attention to any task or activity. Through meditation our consciousness expands..

Visualization

While visualization, we  are required to focus on our goal or a particular scenario. Whereas, meditation is beyond focus or concentration. It is pure awareness and nothing else.

Cognitive therapy

One of the outcomes to Meditation is disposal of thoughts and perception. It helps in widening the attitude and empowering our behavior. But, cognitive therapy in itself is not meditation.

These are great practices to prepare us for meditation. But, meditation is an “Experience”; whereas there are different tools that prepare us to sit in meditation. Then, there are different tools used to sit in meditation to finally experience “a state of no mind.”
