Common Misconceptions about Pranayama

Pranayama is an indispensable tool in Yoga. And as per Hatha Yoga Pradapika; the Breath, the vital forces, the mind, body and thoughts are all energy. Thus, when the breath is modified; then the body, mind, thoughts and vital force are also modified.

Having a strong understanding about Pranayama improves the yoga practice. Also accelerating the meditation practice.

Common Misconceptions about Pranayama

1) Pranayama is often referred to as “Breath Control”

Pranayama is often interpreted as prana + yama, that is, breath control. But, it is prana + aayama which means breath expansion/extension.

Pranayama helps in extending one’s limitations. It helps to attain higher states of vibratory energy. In simpler words, a person is able to activate the prana comprising the human framework. Thus, making one more aware to the vibrations in the cosmos and within.

2) Pranayama is best done when sitting straight

Pranayama when practiced with asanas, manipulates and harmonizes the energies is the physical and the pranic body. Also, ujjayi breath can be practiced while sitting, standing or lying down.

3) Kevala kumbhaka is an esoteric concept

Kevala kumbhaka is a state in which there is only retention of breath. This is an advanced pranayama technique. Where the pressure in the lungs becomes the same as the atmospheric pressure. Thus, the lungs stop their activity.  It is still experienced in high states of meditation by yogis.

4) Pranayama is deep breathing

There are different breathing techniques in Pranayama. Deep breathing is just one small part of Pranayama.

5) Pranayama affects the body and mind

Pranayama affects layers of the human body. That is, the body, mind and the energy sheath.

Finally, Pranayama should be practiced without any strain or excessive force. It can be used to energize, cool or balance the various koshas.
