Hemp 101: Everything you need to know about this plant

Tags: hemp

In the last few weeks, I have read about Hemp oil, hemp seeds, industrial hemp. And I see various advertisements about hemp nutrients. Thus, I needed to research and write about it.

Everything you need to know about Hemp

There are many different varieties of the cannabis plant. Hemp also called industrial hemp; refers to the non-intoxicating (less than 0.3% THC) varieties of Cannabis sativa L. Both hemp and marijuana come from the same cannabis species. But are genetically distinct and are further distinguished by use  and cultivation methods.

How is Hemp used?

One of the earliest uses of hemp was as a food source. The different ways Hemp is used is:

Hemp seed oil

It is probably the most recognizable product. It is produced by cold pressing of hemp seeds. Which contain an ideal ratio of omega 3 & omega 6 essential fatty acids. They are also rich in proteins, soluble and insoluble fibers, vitamins and minerals.

Hemp seeds

They were mainly used as a food for the poor and animals. Because the seeds  have many beneficial effects, people have started consuming them. They are mainly used as an additive to various foods, flakes, salads, protein bars, smoothies, deserts, etc. These seeds can be roasted, germinated and eaten as fresh sprouts.

Hemp flour and hemp proteins

Hemp flour can be finely sieved, so the larger particles that contain mostly fibers, are separated. This leaves us a finely sieved hemp flour and the thicker hemp protein.

Hemp Tea

It is mainly used for its various benefits and it also aids in relaxation.

Hemp based products

Hemp seed oil  is being used in shampoos, skin care products, balms, etc. As Hemp is a derivative of Cannabis.

Hemp textiles

They are one of the strongest fibres that are resistant to mold, salt and UV light. These properties led to the production of ropes and sailboats (in addition to clothing) for centuries. Because of hemp fibre strength, Chinese developed special techniques and started making hemp paper (it is much more durable than plain paper) hundreds of years ago.

These are the popular uses. Hemp is also being used in construction, for medicinal purposes and more..

Benefits of Hemp

  • Protects the brain
  • Boosts heart health
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Improves skin conditions
  • Nutritious food
  • Relaxation effects
  • Improves body immunity

Hemp has a huge potential for replacing numerous raw materials. Hemp can do a lot, but it can’t get you “high.” Because hemp varieties contain virtually zero THC. Also, hemp seeds/flour is good in moderation.
