The mind is the king of senses, but the breath is the king of the mind. ~ Hatha Yoga Pradipika
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bangalore, found Ujjayi pranayam can increase our oxygen consumption by about 50%. I have often found that people focus on making the sound. Rather than feeling and extending it.
Are you Practicing Ujjayi Breath efficiently?
1) Nostril Breathing
In Ujjayi breathing, the nose is the center for both inhalation and exhalation. A soft wind or the ocean waves’ sound is emulated. The lips are gently closed. Although the Breath is passing through the nostrils the emphasis is on the throat.
While teaching the students; the mouth is used to breathe. So that, the students get used to the physical sensation in their throats and the sound of breath. But, after a little practice. It is best to use the nose only for Ujjayi Pranayam.
2) Do not engage the vocal cords
The glottis muscles (vocal cords) are NOT used to create the breeze like sound in Ujjayi. If the vocal cords are used then, the sound becomes like a loud snore or a whistle accompanies the sound. In fact, if you engage the back of your throat. You might end up constricting it, which is not feel relaxing at all. The larynx is used to ensure that it is a three part breath. That is, the belly, upper chest and throat are used.
3) Let it be effortless
Ujjayi breath is not any tension or constriction. But it is an effortless movement of breath and energy. Using too much effort or having an inconsistent rhythm deters the relaxation and energizing experience.
The breath is a powerful force. It is one of the only autonomous systems of the body that can also be consciously controlled. The next time you feel stressed, draw your attention toward your breath. Is your breath short and labored? Are you holding your breath? Practice Ujjayi efficiently to relax, energize, focus…
