Are You Damaging Your Hearing?

We are constantly surrounded by noise in all areas of our daily lives. Such as travelling on the train, going to a restaurant or heading to summer festivals. Permanent hearing damage may take milliseconds, or may be gradual, depending on noise intensity. We may not realise the damage to our hearing until it is too late. Wearing the right hearing protection keeps your noise exposure within daily acceptable limits and helps to prevent hearing loss.
Hearing loss is commonly associated with noise, also known as noise induced hearing loss.

What is the daily sound limit?

When continuous sound levels reach 80dB employers should offer Noise protection, when the sound reaches above 85dB they must enforce the use of noise protection in the workplace.

This is because continuous exposure to noise, above 85dB, increases the risk of Hearing damage in the form of tinnitus, permanent or temporary hearing loss.

How loud is loud?

Do you know what sounds take you above your daily exposure limit? The daily exposure limit is how long you can be exposed to certain sound levels before you are at risk of damaging your hearing.

Here are some examples of sounds above 85dB, and how you can protect your hearing for longer by wearing hearing protection!

The time to reach your daily exposure limit, with correctly fitted hearing protection, is based on noise protection equivalent to 18dB SNR.

Decibel Level Sound Daily Exposure without earplugs Daily Exposure with 18dB SNR earplugs
90dB Lawn Mower 2 hours Safe
100dB Tube Train/ Symphony Orchestra 15 minutes Safe
110dB Baby Crying/ Rock Concert 3 hours
120dB Ambulance Siren 7 seconds
130dB Pneumatic Drill 1.5 minutes
