Common Mistakes in Creating a Healthy Coffee Recipe

Tags: coffee

Coffee is a popular drink today not only for its taste and caffeine, but also for the antioxidants it provides. There are also other great health benefits to drinking Coffee. People look for healthy coffee recipes in order to boost the maximum health benefits they’re receiving. However, some people make common mistakes when doing this and when brewing their coffee. To prevent this, below are some common mistakes to avoid.

  • Oil

Adding oil to coffee is one of the main options in making it healthy. However, not all oils are created the same. For example, using coconut oil is a great option for making your coffee healthier. However, using ordinary cooking oil is not. Raw and unrefined coconut oil has health benefits that ordinary oil does not, so you have to be careful when choosing your oils.

  • Butter

Just like adding oil, adding butter can be a source of excellent health. Butter provides fat, which is then converted into energy. However, like oil, it’s important to make use of only the best butter – grass fed butter. Never use margarine, which is known to be a hydrogenated junk food.

  • Milk

Many people add milk to their coffee to enhance flavor. Of course, milk itself can provide health benefits, but when added to your coffee, it can actually ruin the benefits of the coffee. This is because milk can restrict the fat burning mode that coffee can provide in the body. So it’s actually better to drink your coffee black.

  • Sugar

Sugar may be delicious, but it’s not nutritious. It’s a carbohydrate, which turns into a fat that the body will store, defeating the purpose of drinking the coffee. If you want to make your drink sweet, it’s better to use natural sweeteners in place of sugar.

  • Ordinary Coffee

Most ordinary coffee is contaminated with pesticide. Consuming these coffees means you’re consuming the pesticides as well, affecting your health. Buy organic because these beans are free from pesticides and come in natural packages to avoid contamination. They are much better for your health.

  • Equipment

If you’re using a home espresso machine or a single cup coffee maker, make sure your equipment is clean. It’s important that no coffee or soap residue is on any part of the interior of the machine so that your coffee doesn’t get contaminated.

  • Beans

Don’t drink old beans. You only want to buy as much as you will consume in 1-2 weeks. Also, pre-ground coffee is more susceptible to oxidation, so you want to purchase beans over pre-ground. Grind them as close to drinking time as possible.

  • Grounds

Using the wrong size of grounds will throw your coffee out of whack too. Ground too fine, coffee will often taste bitter. Ground too coarse, it may be too weak. Also, you want your grounds to be even, so that the water can properly filter through them.

  • Ratio

If you use the wrong coffee-to-water ratio, your coffee will not taste right. For every 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds, you’ll want 6 ounces of water. Any more, and you may have bitter coffee. Any less and your coffee may be weak and watery.

  • Temperature

Water should be around 200 Fahrenheit, just before boiling (at 212). Too hot and it will scald your coffee, while too cool and the flavors won’t be developed.

  • Water

Tap water can carry minerals that will add flavor to your coffee. They can also be bad for your health. Use bottled or filtered water for your coffee making.

  • Storing

Store your beans in an air-tight jar. Not all bags were meant to store for longer periods of time. Humidity will ruin coffee beans, so store it in a cool, dry place. Don’t freeze it because that robs the coffee beans of some of their natural gases. This will take away some of the flavor as well.

  • Waiting

Waiting to enjoy your coffee will make it cool, which will naturally extinguish some of its flavor. Cooling down will also make it bitter. So when you’ve brewed your coffee, don’t wait until it’s cooled down too much; enjoy it while it’s hot.

  • Cups

What type of cup you enjoy your coffee in does make a difference. It can change the taste, like plastic. Only use high quality glasses designed for coffee. This will ensure that your coffee tastes just right in the morning.

  • Filter

Make sure you keep your filter clean. Running it through with old grounds still in it will impact the taste of your coffee. So, when you’re finished brewing, clean it out thoroughly.

Coffee is a drink enjoyed by many from all around the globe. It’s rich in flavor and has good health benefits. However, some people make common mistakes in coming up with good recipes and in their brewing methods. The above-mentioned simple ways can be followed to keep both from occurring.
