Monday Briefing: House Passes Obamacare Replacement Bill

Happy Monday, dear Home Health Care News readers. As you settle back into the work week, take a minute to catch up on all the news you might have missed with our Monday Briefing.

Keep reading to check out our coverage of earnings results season from some of the biggest public home health care companies.

The big ticket item in the national news last week was the approval of the new American Health Care Act (AHCA), aka the bill to repeal and replace Obamacare. House Republicans pushed the legislation through with a narrow majority on May 4, making all those watching on the sidelines say, “May the Fourth be with our health.” Critics of the bill say it will impact more than 24 million Americans via less Medicaid funding and gutting protections for pre-existing conditions.

Here’s what Richard Dituri, a home care worker from Tulare County, California, and Trump voter, had to say:

“When I voted for President Trump, I wanted him to improve health care. I did not imagine he and Congress would vote to end Medicaid. My care recipient needs Medicaid to survive; he would not have prescription medicines, doctors’ visits or home care services without Medicaid.”

NAHC and VNAA also weighed in.

Amy’s Adds

Many of our readers probably saw Jimmy Kimmel’s heartfelt plea to keep health care coverage and protections for those with pre-existing conditions when he gave an honest rendition of the birth of his son, who was recently born with a heart defect. Check out the video below to hear the story:

In case you missed it, here are our top stories from last week:

—In its 2017 first quarter earnings report, the CEO of Amedisys (Nasdaq: AMED) said that improving growth on the home health side of the business was “non-negotiable.” Growth flattened during the first three months of the year, while Amedisys’ other segments, including hospice, saw big gains.

—After more than two decades, Great Lakes Caring Home Health and Hospice CEO William Deary announced he has stepped down from the role. Adam Nielsen, who was named president of Great Lakes in January 2016, as assumed the CEO position, effective immediately.

—President Trump’s recent executive order to “hire American” has some wondering what the impact could be on an industry like home care, where workers are desperately needed.
