Healthy Breakfast Ideas – Kick Your Cereal Habit

bowl of cereal not healthy breakfast ideas

As a kid I ate bowls of cereal for Breakfast. Cereal can be tasty but not healthy breakfast ideas; they may be made primarily of whole grains, which make them better than a lot which are made of refined grains and have sugar added. I love my cereal, but it’s a habit I have to kick. I know eating cereal almost every day for breakfast is not helping my commitment to reducing my carbohydrate intake, healthy eating or weight loss efforts.

Breakfast is an essential meal of the day. It serves to fuel you up. If I skip breakfast, intentionally or not, I start to flag mid-morning. Our motto here at Health Life and Stuff is not to start or follow fad diets but to follow the rules of eating in moderation, healthy foods, and that we are what we eat. Cereals cannot be considered a healthy meal, in our opinion. Even if you look for the box that has high fiber and low sugar, you’ll still be consuming at best 30 grams of carbs per cup.

We are on the hunt for healthy breakfast ideas so we can kick the cereal habit and not even go down the cereal aisle in the grocery store. We are a working family, so no time for fancy recipes and time to bake, or create in advance. Time is a premium in most families; breakfasts need to be as quick and easy as possible.

Carbohydrate Loaded Breakfasts

non Healthy Breakfast IdeasCarbohydrates are needed by us to function. I am not a supporter of the KETO diets because it reduces the carb intake too much. It can also create boredom in your food menu. I do think we all eat too many carbs, and the reason is that foods have been refined and packaged to make our lives easier, not healthier.

Cereal boxes are a prime example of this and we don’t think of them as Healthy Breakfast Ideas. A healthy breakfast menu should include some carbs, but not to the extent that all you eat is cereal. A portion or cupful will have a small amount of fiber which you deduct from the number of carbohydrates. You can see the number of carbs you are eating. In the example, it’s 40 grams per cup.

One of the hardest things to overcome is portion control. I’ve never measured my portions. When I do, I find I am eating more than one cupful. It’s often two full cups, and therefore my carbohydrate intake is twice as much.

Eating one cup of cereal never seems to be enough.  By the time you’ve added milk, you’ve reached a lot of carbs on the smallest meal of the day. Milk has a lot of sugar in it. Who cares about the fat, it’s the sugar that’s the problem.

Oats are also high in carbs. Bread has a high carb value. Fruits are full of sugar carbs, although some are better than others. Another terrible breakfast food is breakfast cookies. There’s no difference between them and regular cookies. Full of carbs and sugar. Drop those things like a rock, they are the worst in healthy breakfast ideas to be added to gorcery stores!

Eating only cereals, bread, and fruit will give your sugar craves satisfaction but add too much sugar to your diet. Unused sugar gets stored as fat. And the pounds pile.

Let’s explore a better ideas for breakfast. You can moderate your sugar intake, lower your carbs, and start a healthier breakfast regimen.

Easy Healthy Breakfast Ideas

One of the easiest ways to deal with your cereals is to reduce them rather than completely cut them out. Habits are hard to kick. It’s so easy to start the same old habits right back up. Instead, look for foods you can add to the calorie count that are lower in sugar or refined carbs and reduce your cereal. Make some days free of grain. Variety is the spice of life, just a little effort at the grocery store to stock up with new foods.

Low sugar yogurt is a great food to add. Greek yogurt is an ideal product and comes in many flavors. If you want to choose a fruit greek yogurt, find one with berries, like blueberry, raspberry or strawberry.

Smoothies are great healthy breakfast ideas and best if you make them yourself. Shelf smoothie drinks are loaded with sugar. Sugar is a preservative, and shelf items need sugar to give them longevity. Try homemade smoothies instead. They are so much better for your health.

Smoothies can be made using raw fruits and veggies, by adding yogurt to start or by using almond milk, pea milk or similar, using a protein powder mix and adding fruit for flavor. To make smoothies, you’ll need a good blender. We’ll add some breakfast drinks later that are excellent for reducing carb intake, sugars and can help lower your A1C.

Breakfast Ideas For Weight Loss

Cut your calories too much at breakfast; you’ll set yourself up for failure for the rest of the day. The healthiest breakfast for weight loss is going to give you enough fuel to last to lunch, with a snack midway.

We believe that steady weight loss comes with burning more calories per day than your body uses. Make your food intakes moderate and balanced. Eat healthy foods and don’t starve yourself. Healthy breakfast ideas do not include empty calories. Your mouth gets hungry, and you’ll crave sugar. You need carbs to keep going. You’ll reach for the worst foods and undo the good you’ve started. This is yo-yo dieting at its worst. We call it a meal by meal yo-yo eating. Try to reduce your intake of carbs and sugars by replacing them with better choices. Low carb breakfast ideas do not have to be extreme changes.

You can choose eggs and bacon or ham as a good healthy breakfast for weight loss. Smoothies or breakfast drinks are tasty as well. Add some berries or half an orange. The fruit has sugar in but is also full of antioxidants, and bananas have pre-biotics. Pre-biotics feed any probiotics you take.

For weight loss, we like low carb healthy breakfast ideas. It meets the idea of getting rid of carb-loaded bowls of cereal. Smoothies have become our breakfast of choice, but we sometimes need carbs and choose toasted wheat bread with fruit and yogurt.

Healthy Breakfast Ideas with Egg

Healthy Breakfast Ideas with eggs

We don’t like eggs. Not at all. We can tolerate them in recipes like cakes as long as only one is used. It’s not an egg allergy; we hate the taste. It’s hard to follow some diet plans where eggs are a primary product, especially for breakfast. We understand that the egg is a great breakfast item. You’ll see them in many diet plans, including KETO. Eggs are not in our healthy eating meals and maybe not yours either. Not everyone loves eggs.

Eggs are high in protein, have some fat and few carbs. As a breakfast food, it should be a staple item. Healthy breakfast ideas with eggs include boiled, scrambled, fried, as an omelet or with bacon, sausage, ham. Need some carbs? Add a slice of wheat bread. Breakfasts with eggs are well balanced.

The English breakfast always had eggs, often with bacon and sausages, grilled tomatoes, sometimes with baked beans and even fried bread. It’s a lot to eat, but for people working in the field all day long, the extra calories were needed. It’s still a well-balanced meal with lots of protein, fiber, carbs, and fats.

Breakfast Smoothie Recipes

Make sure you have a good blender to make smoothies. We have a Ninja and love it. Very easy to clean too. We recommend buying blenders that have a minimum 1000 watt motor. Choose from the mixers above which meet that standard.

Two Staples of Our Healthy Breakfast Ideas

Healthy Breakfast Ideas with unsweetened almond milk

Healthy Breakfast Ideas with protein powder

Our quick healthy breakfast ideas for weight loss are smoothies. To keep the sugar and carbs down, we have two items at home all the time.

The first is unsweetened Almond milk. At only 35 calories per cup and zero net carbs, it has no protein and a little fat.

The second is Isoflex Protein powder from Allmax. Over many years we’ve tried protein powders, and this one tastes the best. Chocolate is the nicest, but the vanilla is good as well. Depending on what we add we use the best flavor match. Chocolate gets used most.

It comes in peanut, birthday cake, chocolate mint, strawberry, and other flavors.

We only use a half scoop of the protein powder in our smoothies, and that gives us 65 calories, 14 grams of protein and less than 1 grams of carbs.

We add whatever fruits we have in the fridge, some peanut powder, frozen fruits like pineapple with a little melted coconut oil makes a great Pina Colada tasting breakfast. Or just mix a chocolate drink with a full scoop and eat a cup of berries for a healthy breakfast.

Healthy breakfast foods do not mean eating the same everyday. Mix it up, eat different foods and treat yourself once in a while.
