How to Roll a Joint with Hemp Flower

Joint, spliff, J, doobie—call it what you will, but the Joint has long-been the iconic way to consume cannabis. Now that Hemp is all mainstream and accessible, cannabis connoisseurs and total newbies alike are rolling it up, smoking it up, and enjoying the high-CBD hemp experience and a diverse world of hemp flower flavors.

If you’re setting out on the well-blazed trail of hemp-smoking, you’ll definitely want to know how to roll a joint with hemp flower. Opinions about joint-rolling are not hard to find—every frequent toker has their preferences on methodology and form. In this article, we’ll provide a quick step-by-step guide on how to roll a joint with hemp flower.

How much hemp flower should you use in a joint?

As a beginner, sticking with about a 1/2 gram of hemp is best. The standard 1-1/4 rolling paper size is a good starting point also. The combo of a 1/2 gram and this rolling paper size gives you a smaller joint that can be easier to roll and manage while you roll.

Typical hemp pre-rolls, including ours at Timbr Organics, have a full gram of flower in a king-size rolling paper. Once you’ve got rolling down to a science, you can easily level-up to larger joints with a full gram of hemp.

How to Roll a Joint with Hemp

If you normally rely on hemp pre-rolls, learning how to roll a joint may seem intimidating. But, really, it’s not too hard even with no experience. We’ve broken the process down into easy-to-follow steps, and we’re confident you’ll be rolling like a pro in no time.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Hemp flower in the strain you prefer
  • A cannabis grinder (or a small pair of scissors)
  • Crutch or filter material (optional)
  • Rolling papers
  • A pencil, pen, small stick, or similar object to use as a tamper

1. Grind the CBD hemp flower

To get a good even burn, you’ll need to break down the hemp flower into finer material (usually called shake) with a more consistent consistency. A well-cured product like Timbr Organics hemp flower is going to be dry enough that you can create shake with your fingers and maybe a small pair of scissors. But, a grinder makes the process a lot easier and yields consistency. Plus, a grinder prevents your hands from getting sticky, which can be a pain when you touch the joint paper.

2. Create a filter (optional)

If you prefer a straight joint without a crutch, you can skip to step three. A crutch does have advantages; you won’t lose hemp from the one end as you roll or as you smoke, you get some added stability to hold the joint’s shape, and you can smoke all of the flower without burning your lips trying.

Filters can be made out of thin cardboard like a business card. Simply cut the material to the desired length, make a few accordion-like folds on one end, and then roll the material to create a cylindrically shaped tube of sorts.

3. Fill the joint with hemp flower

Hold the paper with one hand so that it has a slight dip down the center, and begin filling your joint with your shake. If you made a crutch, position it on one end. As noted earlier, most joints are going to hold about a 1/2 gram or gram of hemp. Once you’ve got what seems to be a good amount, work the joint with your fingers to give it a good, easy-to-roll form.

Quick Tip – Joint papers come in a lot of different forms—flavored, all-natural, and traditional. Hemp papers are popular because they’re strong, thin, and produce an even burn. Plus, pairing hemp-based paper with hemp flower means you get full hemp flavor.

4. Pack it in

With enough hemp now in place, pinch the paper together and sort-of roll it between your fingers. You’re not rolling to seal off just yet; the goal here is to get the hemp down into a compressed, almost conical shape down the center of the paper.

5. Roll the hemp joint

Now’s the biggest challenge in learning how to roll a joint. You can totally wreck your progress so far with the wrong move, too much saliva, or a slip of the hand.

  • Tuck the edge of the rolling paper without glue over the line of hemp in the center
  • Roll the remaining paper into shape
  • Lick the glued edge when you get to the end, just slightly
  • Tack down the glued edge with just a little finger pressure

Quick Tip – If you used a crutch, use it to guide your paper around the joint. You can easily work your way down after rolling and tacking the paper on the crutch end.

6. The finishing touch

The big finish is to do a quick pack on the end of the joint. Grab a pen, a small stick, or whatever you have within reach and use it to gently pack the flower in the open end of the joint by tamping it slightly. If you’re lighting up right away, you’re good to go. If you’ll be lighting up later, close up the tip by twisting the paper between your fingers.

7. Light up, enjoy, experiment with other joint-rolling techniques

There you have it. Any luck, you’ll fire it up, get a good even burn, and enjoy your hemp joint to the fullest.

Once you’ve got the basics down, you can try your hand at all kinds of other joint-rolling methods. You may want to roll a fatty by learning how to roll a blunt, for example. Or, maybe you want a thin pinner for a quick smoke. Dutch tulips, cross-joints, L-joints—seriously, joint-rolling is an all-out art, and it can be fun to experiment.
