The Adidas x Ivy Park Catsuit is Exactly What You Need

The Adidas x Ivy Park Catsuit just got dropped…again.

If you haven’t been paying attention, the collaboration between Adidas and Beyonce’s Ivy Park recently debuted its second collection, known as Drip 2. And while Drip 2 came in several colors, including green, yellow, and mesa, it was Drip 2.2 that brought us the Black Pack.

The Market of Adidas x Ivy Park

According to this CNBC article, “Adidas says the deal, the terms of which weren’t released, makes Beyonce the first black woman to be sole owner of an athleisure brand.”

“The collaboration is a continuation of Adidas’ (ADDDF) strategy of leveraging non-athlete influencers to work as ‘creative partners’ for limited capsule collections of its athletic wear. Scarcity and celebrity have proven a winning combination for Adidas’ high-profile collaboration with Kanye West’s Yeezy label,” writes Chauncey Alcorn of CNN Business.

And the market for the collaboration appears strong, with the collaboration’s products selling out immediately upon their release for sale online.

Fans remain excited about the products, even after missing out on the ability to purchase the products.

Only time will tell. However, financial market experts are anticipating that sales from the Adidas x Ivy Park collection could surpass sales from the Adidas Kanye West collaboration.

Adidas x Ivy Park Drip 1

The Adidas Ivy Park collaboration dropped its first collection in January of 2020. The drop came with a lot of fanfare. Beyonce had packages of the line delivered to fans, celebrities, and influencers across the country, and those receiving the packages immediately shared their thoughts on the line on their social media pages.

The maroon-themed collection included bodysuits, sports bras, track pants and jackets, hoodies, tops, dresses, duffel bags, socks, and four different sneakers. In addition to maroon, the first collection’s main colors included cream and orange.

The logos of both companies appeared on the merchandise. From the classic Adidas three-stripe hallmark to the Ivy Park insignia, the pieces played up the collaboration between the two entities.

Packages went to Reese Witherspoon, Cardi B, Ellen DeGeneres, Janelle Monae, Zendaya, and more.

Adidas x Ivy Park Drip 2

On October 30, 2020, Drip 2, the second collection, went on sale. And like Drip 1, most pieces sold out immediately. Fans expressed excitement about the arrival of the collection and disappointment when they went to their cart to check out items that had already sold out.

And they had a reason to be disappointed. Drip 2, themed with colors of mint green, dark green, and yellow was more practical and inclusive than the first collection, in some opinions. Although Drip 1 was indicative of the popular streetwear-athleisure look, there were a few pieces that felt more like fashion ready for the runway. And even though those pieces may have lacked the “I’m running to the grocery store” aesthetic that practical humans typically buy, you have to remember that members of the Beyhive are not practical humans. They are members of a tribe loyal to Queen Bey.

Adidas x Ivy Park included the knitted catsuit in yellow, yellow and green, and later black.

In round two, the NaeNae Twins, Kerry Washington, Mo’Nique, Mariah Carey, Kehlani, and others received gifts from Beyonce. Even her mom, Tina, shared her thoughts about the gift on Instagram.

Drip 2 included sports, hoodies, crop tops, track pants and jackets, bodysuits, leggings, shorts, and accessories like hats and belt bags. The collection also includes face masks in different colors.

Drip 2 also expanded the sizes available and included several gender-neutral pieces.

Adidas x Ivy Park Drip 2.2 and the Adidas Ivy Park Catsuit…in Black

No sooner than Drip 2 sold out of most of its collection, the team dropped Drip 2.2.

Drip 2.2 is the black version of the collection that was released by Adidas x Ivy Park in Drip 2. It just comes with a separate name, the Black Pack.

Where you saw colors like mint green, dark green, and yellow dominate before, you now see the color black, with highlights of tan appearing in the Adidas three-stripe on some of the pieces. And one of the standout pieces is the black catsuit.

While the catsuit is available in other colors, it’s the black version that catches the eye.

The retail price is $140 and as of the date of this article is in limited supply on ASOS. On auction sites, however, it sells from $160-$175.

The Adidas x Ivy Park catsuit features contour cups and underwire for support. It has two sets of straps. One set is a straight front to back set crossing over the shoulder where a bra usually crosses over the shoulder. The second set of straps starts in the front but crisscrosses over the upper back. Both straps are adjustable for fit. This feature is great for women who plan to wear the Adidas x Ivy Park catsuit during sports activities and not just as a fashion statement.

The knitted catsuit is a 100% polyester unitard, featuring the Ivy Park label in tan on the straps and the Adidas logo on the back. Polyester is a better fabric for sports and athletic activities than cotton, which doesn’t wick as well and can hold onto smells.

And of course, the biggest feature is the ease of wearing one piece of clothing and not having to worry about finding a matching top or bottom. Plus, black is one of the easiest colors to coordinate with other colors.

Here’s how to style the Adidas x Ivy Park bodysuit. Throw on a hat and jacket if you need to, and you’re done.

From the Adidas website: “Go hard in this Adidas x IVY PARK bodysuit. The flexible, circular knit design lets you move freely, while giving the illusion of following the natural curve of the body. Adjustable double straps perfect the fit. You’ll walk out the gym doors feeling snatched.”

Will the Adidas x Ivy Park Collaboration be Successful

The Adidas x Ivy Park collection has already proven to be successful with fans. The immediate sell-out of most pieces indicated that there’s a strong market for the line. Within days of the sell-out, auction sites were already filled with items for sale that could no longer be found on Adidas’ website.

But early sell-out is not necessarily an indicator of long-term success. Profit margins on clothing are always slim in the fashion industry, as covered in this McKinsey report.

And clothing, in particular, tends to do well depending on fashion trends.

If the Adidas x Ivy Park collaboration can continue to build on its current success, we can expect to see more great pieces like the Black Pack catsuit.
