HOW TO TREAT YOUR NATURAL CURLS

While hairstyles come and go curls have a particularly contentious history. From Marilyn Monroe to Beyonce, curls are often envied by their straight-haired counterparts.  Curly Hair represents freedom, strength, and independence. However, curly hair can be unruly and hard to manage. Curls bends and coils. Because of all the twists and turns, it can be fragile and delicate. And because of its curvy nature, the natural oils produced by the scalp to soften and protect strands have a harder time traveling from top to bottom.

  1. GOOD HAIR WASH

Washing your hair is the first and foremost step in any hair care routine that will result in a good style. Washing or cleansing ensures that there is no dust, excess oil, dead skin cells and product buildup on your scalp.

TIPS:

  • Avoid sulphates, silicones and parabens in your hair products as these ingredients may strip your hair of its natural oils and drying them out.
  • Avoid excessive shampooing as curly hair tends to become dry easily. Excessively shampooing your hair can suck out its natural moisture.
  • Avoid rinsing your hair with hot water.
  • Use cold water to wash your hair as it will snap those cuticles shut, which in turn will lock in moisture, make your hair shinier and reduce frizz.
  1. DEEP CONDITIONER

You should always condition after you cleanse your hair, which should be only a couple of times per week. The other days, just wet your hair and use your fingers to comb generous amounts of conditioner through it.

TIPS:

  • Don’t rinse all your conditioner out of your hair.
  • Look for conditioners with ingredients that hydrate hair including shea butter, vegetable oils, jojoba oil, cetyl esters, olive oil and wheat germ.
  • Deep condition your hair using a rich, thick product and keep it on at least 15 minutes, atleast once or twice a week.
  1. HOT OIL TREATMENT

The hot oil treatment softens and strengthens your hair while making sure it feels super hydrated and moisturized.  This routine is best for the driest times because our hair tends to dry out faster. The hot oil treatment also adds an extra bit of shine to your Natural Hair.

 TIPS:

  • Mix Castor oil, Grape seed oil, Olive oil and Avocado oil and apply it on your hair. Keep it overnight and then wash your hair next day.
  1. USE CURLING CREAM AND LEAVE-IN CONDITIONERS

Curling creams and leave-in conditioners helps reduce frizz, adds shine and defines curls with long-lasting hold. After shampooing and conditioning, section hair and evenly apply Curl defining cream on very wet hair. Scrunch curls upwards for definition. Air dry or diffuse. Do not touch hair while drying to prevent frizz. Once hair is completely dry , gently scrunch curls to soften the cast.

TIPS:

  • Don’t use too much of these curl defining creams and conditioners can weigh down your hair. So less is more!

Lastly, Having to touch and style your natural hair too often can cause hair damage and breakage. Give your hair a break by wearing styles that don’t require so many styling products or switch between high and low manipulation styles. This will ensure that your hair stays moisturized and hydrated for days.Sleeping with cotton scarves or pillowcases will not only damage your hair or cause split ends. They strip your hair strands of its much-needed moisture which then results to dry and dull looking natural hair. If you have to sleep with a scarf, invest in a silk one, a satin pillowcase, or better still get a satin bonnet, which would stay firmly on your head overnight. Always keep heat away from your natural hair at all cost. Applying heat to your natural hair, styling your hair with heat, using flat irons or blow dryers on a regular will dry out your hair faster and strip the moisture out of your hair. And when this moisture is gone, it might take a while for the natural oils to remoisturize your hair.  Those split ends to make it easy for moisture to escape your hair shafts, so you may need to trim your natural hair regularly to get rid of split ends, brittle ends, and single strand knots. Over time this would help your natural hair grow and retain moisture. Also Touching your natural curls all the time will make your hair dry out faster and strip your hair of all its moisture eventually. Get over the hand-in-hair syndrome and keep your natural hair moisturized.
