How Does Too Much Sugar Affect Your Body?

Food cravings are extremely common, specific types of foods, including chocolate and foods high in both Sugar and fat. We already know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for health. Sometimes we forget everything, and we start having candy, ice-creams, sweets to change the mood.

However, the guidelines advise that people limit added sugars to less than 10% of their daily calorie intake. For a daily intake of 2,000 calories, added sugar should account for fewer than 200 calories. However, in 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) advised that people eat half this amount, with no more than 5% of their daily calories coming from added sugar. For a diet of 2,000 calories per day, this would amount to 100 calories, or 6 tsp, at the most.

Sugar is a carbohydrate molecule, and there are two types.

The first is called simple sugar, and it is present in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and beans. Because these foods contain vitamins, proteins, and fiber, they slow down sugar absorption and make it a healthful option.

The second is added, or processed, sugar, which has no nutritional value. Added sugar is present in candy bars and soft drinks, among other foods and beverages. The body does not absorb this kind of sugar, so the sugar goes straight into the system.

No matter what it’s called, sugar is SUGAR, and in excess, it can negatively affect your body in many ways, specially people with a very high sugar can get really affected.

  • Tooth decay: According to WHO, People who frequently eat sugary foods, particularly in between mealtimes as snacks or in sweetened drinks, are more likely to develop tooth decay. Sugar feeds bacteria that live in the mouth. When bacteria digest the sugar, they create acid as a waste product. This acid can erode tooth enamel, leading to holes or cavities in the teeth.
  • Weight gain: Now a days we are very concern about our health, and some people believe that sugar is the main cause of weight gain. Sugar can affect the hormones in the body that control a person’s weight.
  • Diabetes: When a person has diabetes, their body is not able to regulate their blood sugar levels naturally. They need to use medication, diet, or other lifestyle strategies to manage their blood sugar levels. If they are not able to do this, blood glucose levels can rise too high or fall too low, resulting in headaches and other symptoms. Without effective management, diabetes can damage the blood vessels and nerves. This can change blood circulation to the brain and increase the risk of headaches. Blood vessel damage can also increase the risk of heart and brain conditions that cause headaches.
  • Depression Statics: The National Institute of Mental Health report that in 2017, an estimated 3 millionadults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. This represents around 7.1% of all U.S. adults.

In the same year, around 264 million people had depression worldwide.

Although global research into the link between sugar and depression continues, many studies continue to demonstrate that high levels of sugar may contribute to poor mental health.

One of the easiest ways to reduce added sugar intake is to avoid soft drinks and not add sugar to tea or coffee. Beverages are generally the biggest contributors of sugar to any diet.

Added sugar rewards the dopamine system in the brain, creating a short-term high. However, there is also a potential physical and mental low from a high sugar intake. If a person is concerned about weight gain, symptoms that may indicate diabetes, or other symptoms they experience after eating sugar, they should speak to a doctor.
