My spouse and I “talk” about this regularly — and we are very worried
Reputable studies are coming out every month about the potentially negative impact of too much screen time for kids
If you’re like every loving Parent today who cares about nurturing your kids and preparing them for adulthood, you probably have the same worries as other parents like my spouse and me.
We see the reports in the news all the time about the damaging consequences of too much screen time can have on young children. But let’s be honest, we don’t need these studies to tell us what we’ve seen for ourselves… and already know too well.
What we really need is help dealing with all the screens trying to grab our kids’ attention… especially when we’re not around.
I’ve stumbled on exactly the answer parents like us have been looking for. It’s called THiNK OUTSIDE, and I want to tell you why it’s such a gamechanger for parents who care.
Too much screen time is not good? Tell me something we don’t know
Forget about warping our kids brains. And we’re not talking about the educational use of technology in schools!
We’re talking about the direct and indirect dangers posed by frequent screen time today:
- Inappropriate material. Let’s face it. There’s a lot of disturbing if not outright obscene material on the different social media channels and games today.
- Predators. Let’s face it. While the web has offered many benefits, it has also offered opportunities for too many jerks who want to prey on innocent kids.
- Bullies. Besides social media, bullies can be found on multi-player online video games. Worse yet, the lack of real empathy and connection in cyberspace can turn regular kids into bullies.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against technology. But as a parent, I know that technology offers both benefits and dangers — especially for our kids.
Our parents had it easy!
Concern about excessive screen time is nothing new, but it was never this bad in the past.
For our grandparents, screen time meant too much after-school and Saturday morning television — and there were only 4-5 channels!
Our parents had it a little tougher. They had to contend with cable TV that offered dozens of channel options… as well as the rise of video games.
We parents today have it so much worse. Our streaming TV offering hundreds of channels. Video games are now multi-user and online. We have social media everywhere. And our increasingly smarter phones offer thousands of new apps targeting our kids every month.
THiNK OUTSIDE to the rescue!
One of the key things THiNK OUTSIDE made me realize is that our most powerful ally against screen time has been with us all along. And THiNK OUTSIDE helps us harness it to get our kids on the right track.
That ally is nature. Whether you live in the country, the burbs or the inner city, we have opportunities to let nature teach our kids about what’s right — and the real meaning of fun and adventure!
