Why You Shouldn’t Hold Your Pee

Most of us are familiar with the situation when there’s no restroom nearby, and you must Hold your urine for a while. Although doing it occasionally is relatively harmless, repeatedly holding in your pee may not be as safe as it seems. Besides causing temporary discomfort, there are several reasons to break this habit once and for all.

This is not a problem in itself, but if it becomes a habit, there can be long-term health effects. These include an increased risk of infection. If the urine stays in the body longer, the bacteria it contains also stay in the body longer – the risk of a urinary tract infection or bladder infection increases.


The bladder muscles are also weakened during recurrent suppression, which can lead to urinary retention. This means that despite a large and sometimes painful urge to urinate, the bladder cannot be emptied. The backlog of urine can cause kidney damage. If the bladder cannot be emptied despite the urge to urinate, medical attention should be sought as soon as possible.
