Kitchen Diaries: Why I Fell in Love with Ramekins

Hi there. Let’s take a moment to talk about Ramekins.

If you’ve been to a restaurant and ordered a dessert or a souffle, you may have noticed that they arrived in a curiously shaped bowl – it’s flat the whole way at the bottom, and has ribbed sides all around. I personally love these little bowls, and have always wanted a set of them for myself. Searching for them had been a struggle, though, and I didn’t find out that they have their own name until now.

My fellow Fast Metabolism Diet friends, let me introduce you to the ramekin.

Porcelain Ramekins

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS A RAMEKIN?

Ramekins are glazed bowls made with ceramic, porcelain or glass that are designed to withstand high temperatures.

The distinct shape of the ramekin features fluted sides, and classic versions of the bowl are white with a thin interior lip. While best known as a circular bowl, novelty and vintage versions of the ramekin come in different shapes as well, such as hearts or flowers.

Traditionally, the ramekin is used for baking and confectionery purposes, like desserts or other confections that typically don’t do well with being moved from one container to another, such as souffles, creme brulee, and puddings.

The ramekin is also commonly used for serving small or individual portions of a dessert, though more recently are now also used for serving soups, dips, entrees, and even samplings of main dishes and more.

WHY IT’S A GOOD ADDITION TO YOUR KITCHEN

Now that we’ve gotten the details about the ramekin out of the way, let’s talk about why it’s a cool thing to have in your kitchen or your dining area.

As mentioned earlier in the article, the ramekin is typically used for single servings. Now, if you’re on a specialized diet with a detailed Meal plan – like the fast metabolism diet, for example, with its meal Phases – having a fixed serving size can do wonders for portioning meals out throughout the duration of the diet.

Ramekins make it easier to prepare meals too, because you can use them to cook your dishes in an oven. Sure, they’re not any good for stovetop dishes, but if you just want to bake a small serving of vegetables or some coddled eggs, then the ramekin is the perfect size.

Speaking of size, ramekins come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 1-9 ounces, with the 6-ounce size ramekin the most popular as an all-purpose choice. The bigger ramekins are ideal for serving meals fit for 1-2 persons, while the smaller sizes are perfect for sweet indulgences or doling out servings of high-fat and high-protein dishes.

RAMEKIN THE MOST OF IT…

While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may not be the ideal time to go out and about shopping for a set of dishware or two, consider this: portioning meals, whether on diet or not, is all the more crucial during these uncertain times.

Skip the uneven meal sizes, serve only what you need, and get the most out of your Phase meals through portions best suited to your needs. Eat well, eat healthy, and have a safe stay at home this summer!
