COVID-19 situation can get worse in the winter. We don’t have a complete idea of how the virus behaves, but a combination of various factors, such as human behavior, can result in the spike of Covid-19 cases during winter.

Factors responsible for the spike in COVID-19

Here are some of the factors that can contribute to a spike in the COVID-19 cases:

1. Staying indoors

Cold weather pushes everyone to stay indoors. We know that coronavirus can spread rapidly indoors due to poor ventilation than outdoor. So if you engage indoor parties and invite your friends for dinner or entertainment, we could see a surge in the COVID-19 cases.

2. Cold and flu season

Winter is cold and flu season, which means the more people can get sick with the common cold and influenza. Your body immunity gets weaken when you catch a cold, increasing the risk of getting infected with SARS-CoV2.

Precautions to reduce the risk of COVID-19

Here are some of the precautions you can take to avoid getting COVID-19 (or the flu) during the upcoming winter season.

  • Take a flu vaccination – It can prevent you from getting sick with flu and flu-related doctor visits. During 2018-2019, flu vaccination prevented an estimated 4.4 million influenza illnesses and reduced the chances of having doctor visits to 40-60%.
  • Wash your hand frequently – If you’re attending an indoor party, ensure to wash your hands with soap and water before eating, after using the restroom, before touching your face, and anytime your hands are dirty.
  • Avoid limited people to a gathering – Putting a cap on your guest list will reduce the risk of getting and spreading coronavirus. According to the CDC guidelines, the gathering limit should be ten or fewer.
  • Focus on sanitization – If you’re planning a party at your place, don’t forget to sanitize your home. Sanitize frequently touchable areas, such as tables, doorknobs, refrigerators, HVAC remotes, and more.
  • Don’t forget to wear a mask – Wearing a mask and maintaining physical distance is mandatory to keep yourself and others around you safe. Don’t forget to wear a mask and maintain social distance, whether you’re inside or outside your home.
