Why Do So Many Millennials Take Viagra?

Why Do So Many Millennials Take Viagra?

A sharp rise in the use of Viagra by millennial-aged men (born between 1981 and 1996) has drawn increasing attention to what at first glance appears to be a significant uptrend in erectile dysfunction among younger men.

What’s behind this sharp increase in Viagra use within a male population segment usually considered to be the least vulnerable to the symptoms of erectile dysfunction?

Upon closer scrutiny, it appears to be a combination of factors. Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra and the disorder it treats — ED — have been indelibly imprinted on the public consciousness. Young Men who might very well never have given a second thought to ED before the advent of Viagra were suddenly exposed to a flood of advertising for and public discussion about the little blue pill.

Some See Viagra as a Panacea

Some in this group now saw a prescription for Viagra as a panacea for a panoply of sexual problems, many of them more psychological in origin than physical. Remember, of course, that Viagra was developed to treat ED caused by an insufficient supply of blood to the penis, a problem that is clearly physiological.

So a young man fumbling through a sexual experience and failing to get and keep an erection firm enough for intercourse might well seek help for ED. Such failures to launch are usually ascribed to performance anxiety, which is essentially a psychological problem. However, fortified with the confidence conferred by the little blue pill, young men facing this dilemma suddenly found themselves able to perform as they felt they should.

Price of an Unhealthy Lifestyle

However, it also appears that a smaller but significant number of young men actually do suffer from ED of physiological origin. Many medical professionals attribute the rise in ED diagnoses among younger men to unhealthy lifestyle choices. Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, being overweight, and a failure to exercise can all lead to compromised blood flow, which in turn can morph into ED.

Yet another segment of the millennial male population group appears to be using Viagra for purely recreational purposes. This is an alarming development, because these men may very well risk their health and well-being by taking more Viagra than is medically advisable. (Pfizer, the drug’s manufacturer, advise against taking more than 100 milligrams of Viagra in any 24-hour period.) However, as these young men see it, if one 100-milligram Viagra tablet gives them the sexual stamina for multiple serial sexual encounters, surely taking another one or two could make things that much better.

Increases Risk of Side Effects

Such recreational abuse of Viagra sharply increases the risk of side effects, which can include dizziness, headache, blurred vision, nausea or abdominal pain, digestive problems, and facial flushing. Worse yet, the drug can cause more serious side effects such as a sharp reduction or loss of hearing and/or vision and priapism, an erection that persists for four hours or more. Unless treated promptly, priapism can lead to a possible loss of erectile function because of the resultant damage to sensitive penile tissue.

An increased awareness of ED and the drugs available to treat it is a good thing, ensuring young men who are facing genuine problems with erectile function that help is available and encouraging them to consult a doctor. However, recreational use of Viagra or any other ED medication clearly is not only a bad idea but one that could lead to serious health consequences.
