The tragic death of Avicii, the DJ behind some of the most successful songs of the last decade

The sudden death of Swedish DJ Avicii has left fans and artists in shock.

His talent for creating electronic music of popular style made him one of the main names of this genre.

At just 28 years old, Avicii had performed in different parts of the world, worked with some of the world’s most famous artists and accumulated billions of dollars in equity for the reproduction of his songs on different platforms on the internet.

But on his way to stardom, the DJ went on to face frequent Health Problems.

His agent, Diana Baron, was the one who broke the news of his death on Friday night.

She merely said that his body had been found dead in Muscat, the capital of Oman, and gave no more details about the causes of death.

Pop star

His name was Tim Bergling and he was born in Stockholm in 1989.

The artist collaborated with big names in music, among them Madonna, Coldplay, David Guetta and Lenny Kravitz. Recently, he was nominated for Billboard Music Awards in the United States.

His mother is the actress Anki Liden, who starred in “My Dog Life,” a Swedish director’s film Lasse Hallstrom’s Oscar-nominated film.

On one occasion, Avicii said that the sensibility of Swedish pop had a great influence on him.

“We grew up singing great folk songs, which is why our melodic sense is good, you grow with it in you, I think that shapes everyone.”

“But I also grew up meeting people like Eric Prydz and Swedish House Mafia, who were my neighbors.”

British DJ Pete Tong was the one who discovered Avicii when the young Swede participated in a talent show a decade ago.

Avicci gained fame with a song that Tong would end up launching by its label, with the title “Manman”.

“Clearly he had an impressive talent for creating melodies and showed great maturity in the way he connected the tracks,” Tong told the British newspaper Evening Standard in 2014.

“(His talent) is natural, my only regret is that I have not signed a longer contract with him,” he added.

Achieving new “levels”

After gaining fame with a series of songs, his popularity exploded with the song “Levels” in 2011.

The work, which combines a vibrant and euphoric rhythm, reached platinum by its record sales in at least 10 countries.

The success became his ally with another dance track anthem such as “I Could Be The One” he did with Nicky Romero and country music “Wake Me Up,” which sings Aloe Blacc.

Although Avicii developed different formulas, his most successful hits had the same elements: escapist productions, guest singers who gave more depth to the songs and made them more accessible and, above all, irresistible melodies.

When his critics said he did not make “real music,” the DJ told the Evening Standard: “There are melodies, chord progressions are built, you are making music, Mozart wrote on a piece of paper, we DJs we write on computers, I really do not see the difference. ”

A superstar among DJs

His successes continued to occupy the top charts of hits from different countries with songs like “Hey Brother,” “You Make Me,” “The Nights,” and “Waiting for Love.”

The music magazine Billboard praised his productions, though he described his style as a bit “tacky.”

According to Forbes magazine, only in 2015, the DJ earned US $ 19 million (R $ 65 million in current values).

He collaborated with artists such as Coldplay, Rita Ora, Sia, Lenny Kravitz, Leona Lewis and Robbie Williams.

He also participated in the closing ceremony of the 2014 World Cup and in the celebration of the marriage of Prince Carl Philip of Sweden.

In 2012, Avicii embarked on a 27-day US tour titled “House for Hunger,” promising to allocate $ 1 million to Feeding America, a charity that fights hunger in the United States with banks of food for the most disadvantaged communities.

“I found out when I started making money that I really did not need it,” the DJ said on one occasion.

“When you have money in excess, you realize that you do not need it so much, and the wisest and most obvious thing is to give to people who are going through needs,” he adds.

Avicii – Health problems

The artist’s health problems began in January 2012, when he spent 11 days in the hospital because of acute pancreatitis, supposedly caused by too much alcohol.

“Drinking has become a routine for me, but it is impossible to continue touring and drinking at the same time because one day you will collapse,” he told the Evening Standard newspaper. “Especially when you’re doing 320 shows a year.”

He returned to the hospital in 2013 and doctors advised him to remove his removed gallbladder.

However, Avicii did not want to carry out the operation and continued on tour.

By 2014, he was forced to undergo surgery.

The doctors discovered a problem in his appendix and also removed it.

“I took a month off, but it really was not a month when I could not do anything,” he told Billboard.

“I was inside the studio 12 hours a day and then I came back for the tours, it’s hard to say no in this industry, you want to play at everything and be everywhere,” he added.

The high price of tours

Due to his health problems, he announced that he was stopping the tours in 2016.

“It’s something I had to do for my health,” he told the Hollywood Reporter’s website. “The stage was not for me, it was not the shows or the music, it was always the things that surround it, things that were not naturally given to me.”

“In general, I’m more introverted, it’s always been very difficult for me, I think I got a lot of negative energy.”

After announcing his retirement, he said he was able to “reclaim his private life” and that he was “focusing on myself for the first time in a long time.”

“Obviously, that was the most difficult decision I ever made,” he said.

“But up until now this has been a tremendous benefit to me in my well-being, and for a long time I have not felt as happy as I am now.”

His last show was in Ibiza in August 2016.
