Sleep is not a constant state of relaxation. The Sleep cycles are extremely complex and, above all, indispensable. Sleep is in our body’s architecture and our body needs it to replenish the lost resources and to heal our organs. The paradoxical sleep is not very discussed, even though it maintains our mental health.
The sleep cycles
A cycle lasts between 40 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the individual. Each of us has an individual cycle, the duration of which is immutable, inscribed in our brain.
The scientists discovered that there are multiple sleep cycles. However, we only need 3 to 4 cycles per night, on average, to have a restful sleep.
On the other hand, the so-called short sleepers need 2 to 3 hours of sleep and gain the same beneficial result as long sleepers for whom 7 or 8 hours are the indispensable minima.
Between two sleep cycles, we are fully awake, but we do not remember it because this awakening usually lasts a few seconds. If one of this period exceeds one minute it will translate in what we use to call poor sleeping.
The Paradoxical Sleep maintains our mental health
The first phase of a cycle is when we fall asleep and is defined by those 5 to 10 minutes after we get in bed and prepare for sleep.
The second one is much more complex, even though is still an intermediate phase between the falling asleep one and the third phase, the deep sleep. Now, the deep sleep is really important because then is when the body’s organs are repaired, among other benefits for our health.
The last phase of a cycle and the most important one is the paradoxical sleeping, also known as REM. It is called ‘paradoxical’ because we continue to sleep while our brain is active as it would be awake, to some extent.
Besides, the paradoxical sleeping is so deep that it is the hardest to wake up someone at this stage. Paradoxical sleeping is when we dream and, as we can not live without sleep, without dreaming we couldn’t maintain our mental health. For example, schizophrenics are not dreaming.
