Analyzing the Keto Diet

Orange County, CA -March 29th, 2019 -  The human Body gets its energy from the food we consume. Our bodies digest the food by mixing it with acids and enzymes in the stomach. Once absorbed, the carbohydrates break down into glucose. If the glucose levels drop, you’ll feel tired and weak; if they drop any lower, an individual may become confused or drowsy or even lose consciousness and possibly die. However, the body stores enough glucose to last a few days, so if we refrain from carbohydrates for a few days, we go into a process named ketogenesis.

Ketogenesis is a normal metabolic process, where the liver starts breaking down fat into a useable energy source called ketones. “Organs like the brain that normally rely primarily on glucose for fuel can begin to use a substantial amount of ketones,” said Kevin Hall, a National Institutes of Health senior investigator who has studied the ketogenic diet. Once ketogenesis kicks in and ketone levels rise, the body is in a state called “ketosis,” where you’re burning stored fat.

One of the ways to get into ketosis is through fasting, which is when you stop eating for an extended period; the body will increase fat burning for energy and decrease its use of glucose. Another way to get into ketosis is by eating less than 20 to 50 grams of carbs per day.

The Keto Diet is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs which is a lower ratio of protein and a lot more fat than you’d get on other low-carb diets. However, this ratio forces the body to derive most of its energy from ketones. If you overeat carbs or protein, your body is thrown out of ketosis.

The keto diet means subsisting mainly on meats, eggs, cheese, fish, nuts, butter, oils, and vegetables, and entirely avoiding sugar, bread and other grains, beans, and even fruit. The diet is similar to the Atkins diet which is the most famous very low-carb diets that promise to get your body burning fat.

When you examine prior studies comparing low-carb diets to others, the results show dramatic weight loss in the short term, but by the one-year mark, all diets perform equally miserably. On average, the weight is gained back. Having an extreme diet is difficult to stick to in our society today. Stephan Guyenet who is an obesity researcher wrote on his blog:

The more extreme a diet, the harder it is to adhere to, and the ketogenic diet is extreme. “But wait”, you say, “I’ve been on the ketogenic diet for five years, and it’s easy!” That may be true, but randomized controlled trials don’t lie. The average person can’t even stick with the diet for six months, as judged by urinary ketone levels. The minority of people who find it easy, get good results, and stick with it are the ones who write about it on the Internet.

Keto performs similarly to the other fad diets for weight loss. It helps the few that can stick with it, while it fails, or is deserted by the rest.
