New Theory Suggests Life was seeded on Earth by Life – Bearing Comets

Orange County, CA - May 17th, 2018 -  Questionable claims were made in a report entitled Cause of Cambrian Explosion - Terrestrial or Cosmic? Co-authored by a group of 33 scientists, and then published in the Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology journal. It proposes that ‘life was seeded here on Earth by life-bearing comets’ as soon as it was possible for living organisms to survive

On the other hand, alien life spreading like 'seeds' through space isn't new. The study also points to an already existing theory, called panspermia. It’s a hypothesis that life exists throughout the universe - microorganisms (like seeds) in space carry codes for life that was scattered on earth once it was suitable to live in.

Although this may be true, scientists go on and make an even more extraordinary claim about octopuses, stating that they arrived in a similar way dating back to about 270 million years ago.

The research uncovers striking contrasts between the genome of the octopus and other invertebrates.  It shows a staggering level of complexity with 33,000 protein-coding genes, which is more than what’s present in Humans.

This suggestion is all the more fascinating because octopuses have been publicized as a potential model for extraterrestrial beings. Cephalopods, particularly octopus are viewed as the most intelligent of all non-vertebrates, with the highest brain-to-body ratio. They occupy every ocean at almost all depths and possess a range of features that seem almost alien-like.

“The octopus appears to be utterly different from all other animals, even other molluscs, with its eight prehensile arms, its large brain and its clever problem-solving capabilities,” said co-senior author Clifton Ragsdale, associate professor in Neurobiology and Organismal Biology and Anatomy at the University of Chicago.

However, other researchers were not quick to embrace this theory. "There's no question, early biology is fascinating — but I think this, if anything, is counterproductive," Ken Stedman, a virologist, and professor of biology at Portland State University, told Live Science. "Many of the claims in this paper are beyond speculative, and not even really looking at the literature."

While this new study is exceptionally valuable for thinking about impact of the universe on our planet in new ways, the discoveries “cannot be taken seriously, and there is no evidence for it at all” said Karin Molling, a virologist at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Germany, who echoed this sentiment in a piece of commentary published alongside the new paper.
