December 13, 2017. New plans have been announced to automatically screen pregnant woman for SCID. (Severe combined immunodeficiency), a rare genetic disorder characterized by the disturbed development of functional T cells and B cells. Although rare, 20 babies are born with SCID every year which can be prevented with a single blood test. The One Show.

December 11, 2017. The vaginal mesh scandal has claimed its first victim. Panorama investigation reveals medical company failed to fully inform doctors of vaginal mesh risks. Investigation also discovers leading mesh product only tested in 31 women – and on sheep. Hundreds of thousands of women in the UK, US and Australia are currently involved in lawsuits against mesh producers; at least 800 in the UK are suing the NHS. Ethicon is a wholly-owned subsidiary of multi-billion-dollar Johnson and Johnson, one of the main producers of mesh implants and currently the subject of multiple class-action lawsuits. Independent.

December 8, 2017. 800 women are taking legal action against the NHS and the makers of vaginal mesh implants which left women in permanent pain and unable to walk. BBC 1 News.

December 3, 2017. A new study out is uncovering the lives of woman from the past, by accessing their physical strength and it shows they were very strong. Woman from seven thousand years ago through the bronze, iron ages into the medieval and the present, and compared them to today's female  rowers, footballers and runners. She found that the ancient woman typically had more powerful arms than today's elite rowers. BBC Radio 4: Inside Science.

November 28, 2017. Is having a beer belly more risky than thigh fat? Heart attack risk could be dependent on where fat is stored in the body, as opposed to how much is stored, researchers have claimed. Heart attack risk could be increased with fat deposits in the belly, muscles and liver. Women have a higher relative amount of total body fat and higher superficial thigh fat, which is protective for cardiometabolic health. The detrimental fat depots deep in the belly, muscles and liver are more damaging for cardiometabolic health in women compared to men.There are 2.3 million people living with heart disease in the UK. Radiologist, Dr Miriam Bredella.

November 3, 2017. 1 in 3 woman who get breast cancer are over 70, so don't assume you're past it. A lump isn't the only sign of breast cancer. If you notice any changes to your breasts, tell your doctor straight away. Finding it early makes it more treatable and could save your life. NHS.

October 24, 2017. Gene variants raises cancer risk by 18%. Common inherited genetic variants that together raise the risk of getting breast cancer by nearly a fifth have been identified by scientists. An international research project involving 275,000 woman has uncovered 65 new variants. On their own, the risk to those with a family history of cancer increased by 4%. But, adding them to the 180 variants already known, the familial risk goes up by 18%, the "Onco Array Consortium" suggests. Metro News.

October 5, 2017. One of the biggest killers globally, cervical cancer. The disease kills an estimated a quarter of a million woman each year. The vast majority of low-income countries. Across the African continents, it claims an average of 6 women per hour, that's according to the charity Unicef.. What's so frustrating about this is if you identify in the early stages before the cancer properly develops. This is an eminently solvable problem. In a pre-cancer stage, harmful cells can be removed in 10 minutes by freezing or scarping them off. 85% of woman worldwide do not have access to these basic checks. Its now affecting much younger woman across the board. That's mainly due to a virus called HPV (human papalona virus) which is sexually transmitted. BBC World Service: World Hacks.

October 17, 2017. Woman who dye there hair more than six times a year face a 14% increase risk of breast cancer. The advice is to change to natural products that use henna, rose hips or beetroot. Dr Chris Steele. ITV This Morning.

September 19, 2017.  Woman cry 72 times a year. They cry around 4680 times in their adult life, more than twice as often as men. Blokes who say they are less embarrassed to cry in public because they feel its acceptable to show their emotions. August 8, 2017. Its difficult to avoid 'sugars'. Carbohydrates contain sugar. High fructose corn syrup, honey. A study of the civil service of 5000 men and 2000 woman, what they found was that men who had a high consumption of sugar were over 20% more likely to develop anxiety and depression later on in life. August 4, 2017.  Scientists are doing research that could revolutionise medical treatment for Britain's third biggest killer, a 'stroke'. Particularly after the 'menopause', woman are much more likely to have a stroke than men and the outcomes tend to be worse. Hormonal factors may be a part.  Strokes happen when a clot or haemorrhage cuts of blood to parts of the brain. Cells die and some bodily functions are lost and the pattern of which these cells die are different in men and woman.  This is why sex difference research really matters helping us find more accurate and effective ways of tackling diseases. BBC Four. August 2, 2017. 'Women who are pear-shaped' have a lower risk of heart attack, stroke and diabetes says a study. They found that thin people have a higher risk of killer diseases than fat people, since their fat goes straight to their heart and liver. However, researchers said that women who are pear-shaped tend to escape this group, as the bottom and thighs are safer places to store fat on the body. It means the fat is not transported to the essential organs, where it could lead to high blood pressure, high blood sugar and a greater risk of illness in later life. Daily mail.

July 30, 2017.  Is one sex more vulnerable to 'depression and anxiety' than the other? Statistically, woman appear to suffer more, featuring more regularly in figures for consultations, diagnosis and prescriptions for psychotropic medications. This has been consistently the case since data emerged in the 1950s with current statistics suggesting woman are around twice as likely to suffer from mood disorders than men, But statistics tell only part of the story. July 10, 2017. There is a condition called 'Takotsubo cardiomyopathy' which is known as the 'broken heart syndrome'. It can be deadly. It's an abnormality of the heart. The heart muscle becomes week, the whole heart balloons up because the heart muscle has become weakened. Tends to effect woman more than men. Not genetic.  Does not run in families. The Sun on Sunday calls on the government to act urgently to warn of the health risks associated with some types of 'breast implant', The paper cites data from the medicines and health care products regulatory agency showing that 2 woman have died, and more than 20 others have required surgery after receiving textured surface implants which can damage the immune system. Sunday Papers. July 4, 2017. A new study says woman athletes born with high levels of the 'male hormone testosterone' enjoy a significant competitive advantage. The report is based on hundreds of blood samples taken from athletes over a 2 year period. It has been published just weeks before the court of arbitration for sports issues a final ruling on a decision by the governing body of the World of athletics to ban female competitors with high testosterone. BBC World Service News.

July 3, 2017. 'Out-of-date cosmetics' and cosmetics that are not cleaned properly could cause serious health risks. A test on 5 woman's make-up found were found to contained high levels of bacteria similar to the amounts in a river bed. July 2, 2017. Researchers in Rotterdam have apparently found that men's 'average IQ' is 4 points above woman's because they typically have bigger brains. It notes that in the 19th century, the view that woman's smaller brains made them less intelligent was used to justify denying them rights such as voting. News and Sunday papers. BBC Radio 4.

June 9, 2017. 'Ovarian cancer' is very difficult to treat. It's not often picked up in woman until it's quite far advanced and symptoms quite vague. June 27, 2017. Woman in Tanzania get 'cervix cancer'. The culprit is the human pathaloma virus HPV. Two strains in particular, 16 and 18. The virus is transmitted through sex. For some woman, HPV clears up by its self. But for those whose immune systems don't clear it, HPV gradually changes the genetic structure of cervical cells. BBC World Service.
