Addiction to Sex

You can have a very hectic and active Sexual life without having to consider this person as an addict. Addiction to sex is a psychological problem that can have serious consequences on the life and social relationships of those who suffer from it. That’s why a team of psychologists and psychiatrists at the University of California have formulated a list of criteria to diagnose the so-called “hypersexual disorder” as another type of mental health disorder.

People, when they have a very active sexual life, always feel satisfied with the activity and with themselves, enjoy, and feel comfortable with their lives, do not take unnecessary risks, or become obsessed with the subject; This does not happen in the case of addicts. In contrast, sexual addicts never feel satisfaction, despite the amount of acts they fantasize or perform, are not satisfied with their lives, and resort to risks, obsessively, seeking the desired satisfaction.

Sex addicts lack control over their actions and do not care about the problems they cause them, nor the sufferings that their behavior produces. In spite of all that, they can not control the impulse, and again they return to action.
 
Sexual addiction becomes a disorder when it interferes with people’s daily lives, the problem is that they get involved with more and more people, they can even find those who abuse them by doing physical damage or emotional blackmail, and some are victims of manipulators who force them to pay money for their silence.

Sex addiction

Sex addicts are great consumers of pornography, free and paid, resort to compulsive masturbation, often have frequent sexual encounters with known and unknown people, are customers of the sex trade and seek both paid and free sex; they even resort to uncontrollable voucherism, which is popularly known in our culture as “brecheo”. All these activities occur at the same time and, in many cases, prevent the person from complying with their usual social and work schedule. They refer to having a constant sense of emptiness that they only manage to fill with these activities, thus falling into a self-destructive state that is not easy to leave, thus increasing the risk of economic bankruptcy, unpayable debts, and even face problems with justice or acquire and transmit sexually transmitted infections

The sexual addict, the more time he spends in sexual practices, the more things he needs to stimulate himself and satisfy his need, as with other types of addicts. Hypersexual people can have periods of calm and even claim that they have healed their behavior, but this happens quickly, and when the impulse returns, it does so much more forcefully, because without professional help it is difficult to get out of that state.

In spite of everything said, and of the much that is spoken of the subject of sexual addiction, in familiar gatherings, in the television and the radio, this disorder does not constitute a frequent cause of visit to the consultation of sexual therapy; perhaps because many do not consider it a disorder, but a stage of their lives that they will overcome and that will disappear with time.

What causes sex addiction?

This need for abnormally intense sex affects any aspect of the daily life (relationships, work …) is preceded by self-stimulation or compulsive masturbation, multiple sexual partners in one night, as well as several sexual partners at the same time, persistent use of pornography, cybersex, prostitution, exhibitionism, voyeurism, sexual harassment …

Sexual addiction, also called sexual dependence, hypersexuality, nymphomania (in women), satiriasis (in males), sexual compulsive behavior or sexual compulsivity, refers to the phenomenon in which individuals are unable to control their sexual behavior.


Studies of sexual addiction?

No expert can agree on why some people become addicted to sex but, increasingly, support the theory that sex Addiction may be related to a biochemical abnormality or certain chemical changes in the brain. Just as there is a mechanism for survival and reward in our brain with respect to food or drugs, there may be a common path in regard to interest in sex.

Some studies have pointed out that lesions in the medial prefrontal cortex of the brain give rise to compulsive sexual behavior. In the same way, people from dysfunctional families or victims of abuse are the individuals most prone to fall into this disorder of a sexual nature.
