Best ways to add superfoods to your daily diet

“Superfoods” you must have heard this term a lot these days. But what exactly are superfoods?

Superfoods are foods that are full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals that keep your body working efficiently. Superfoods help optimize your body’s ability to function by supplying a megadose of nutrients. But they do more than just help you meet your vitamin and mineral needs or helping you lose the extra kilos. Superfoods can help you achieve better health, prevent chronic disease, and improve the way you feel day in and day out. They are also some of the top anti-ageing foods around.

When combined with regular exercise and a balanced Diet, adding a few of these top superfoods into your day can benefit many different aspects of your health.

But the question is how to incorporate these superfoods into your daily diet? So here I am showing you a few superfoods and the best ways to incorporate them in your everyday food.

  1. Amla: Amla is a seasonal fruit hence make the most of it when it is in season. Amla can be had as a juice or chutney. Amla can also be pickled and stored for the season when amla is not available. This fruit can be consumed any time of the day. Just be sure not to dunk it in too much oil, spices or sugar.
  2. Sabja: These tiny seeds are also known as falooda seeds. These seeds are typically a summer drink as they have a cooling effect on the body. But they are excellent for relieving acidity. So even in other weathers, you can use them to get rid of acidity. Soak 1-2 tsp in 1 glass water for 15-20 minutes and drink. You can add half a lemon juice and some black salt. And Voila!! Acidity gone!. Sabja seeds are also good for weight loss. You can add them to smoothies or milkshakes. You can consume this water pre-meal too if you wish to lose weight.
  3. Sweet potato: These are another yummy superfood. Have them as boiled or roasted as a snack. Don’t combine them with a full meal. If you must have it at meal time, then replace roti and rice with sweet potato.
  4. Moringa: Commonly known as Drumstick tree in India, this is quite an underrated superfood. We often use the drumsticks but a lot of people don’t consume the leaves, flowers or the seeds of the plant. The world is waking up to the benefits of moringa in a big way. Dried Moringa leaves are much richer in nutrition than the fresh ones and hence many companies are now selling the dried leaf powder. It is a health supplement available at health stores. The best time to consume the powder is with breakfast, always with food. You can add it to a smoothie, vegetable juice or can have with honey and lemon. The recommended dosage is 1 tsp per day.  *Those who are on blood thinner medicines should consult their doctor before starting this powder.
  5. Wheatgrass: Nowadays you must have seen a vegetable juice guy selling fresh juices right outside the parks where people go for morning walks. Most of them have wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass juice always has to be freshly squeezed. It is usually consumed as a shot and it has a mild grassy flavour. If you want to consume the powder, make sure you buy raw wheatgrass powder and not the one which has undergone the heating process. You can add 1 tsp of wheatgrass powder to your smoothie or vegetable juice. These are also available as capsules which can be consumed half an hour before lunch.

Apart from these, fresh herbs and spices like ginger, garlic, curry leaves, turmeric, cinnamon are also superfoods. Nuts and eggs also fall under superfood category. As Indian cuisine uses spices liberally, you don’t have to worry about consuming spices. But nuts often get ignored. Include nuts like almonds and walnuts in your daily diet. Superfood seeds like fenugreek can be added to tadka and other seeds like sunflowers, pumpkin and flax can be consumed during the day.

A healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle are a key to a healthy life. Superfoods add bursts of nutrition and accelerate your health. Incorporating these foods into your diet have many many benefits. Indulge in mindful eating, reduce the consumption of refined carbs and welcome health!
