EDINBURG, Texas – The Region One Education Service Center Board of Directors proclaimed May as Mental Health Month. The proclamation, part of a national effort by the organization Mental Health America, encourages each business, school, government agency, health care provider, organization and citizen to share preventive measures to promote mental wellness in all communities.

The proclamation approved April 18, is one of the first steps taken by the newly created Department of Counseling, Guidance, and Mental Health at Region One, led by Director Yovann Salinas, M.Ed., LPC-S.

In addition to providing resources and support for school systems within the eight-county service area, the office will lead the Building Mental Health Leaders Project, a $5.9 million grant aimed to increase school counseling capacity in mental health and social-emotional learning. The grant will also help expand the pool of licensed professional counselors and licensed social workers in the Region. Participating districts include: Brooks County ISD, Donna ISD, Hidalgo ISD, La Joya ISD, Lyford CISD, Rio Grande City Grulla CISD and Webb CISD.

Throughout the month of May, Region One ESC facilities will be illuminated green, for mental health awareness. School systems, as well as surrounding businesses, are invited to join the efforts, which include a week-long awareness campaign in accordance with Mental Health America’s theme for mental health awareness – Look Around, Look Within from May 8-12.

On May 9, Region One ESC invites the entire community to its 1st Mental Health Awareness Community Night from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm (1900 W. Schunior, Edinburg).
