In this disorder, the glycoprotein is missing from the surface of the platelets which is responsible for the sticking together of the platelets through fibrinogen. Hence, platelets cannot make a plug by sticking together. Patients suffering from Glanzmann's thrombasthenia suffer from abnormal bleeding which can be severe. If this disorder is left untreated the hemorrhage can lead to life threatening situation.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Glanzmann’s thrombasthenia is characterized by the easy bruising tendency and bleeding abnormally. This symptom can be seen just after the birth or may be after short span of time. The abnormal or excessive bleeding is usually seen after any surgical procedure performed in that particular patient suffering from this syndrome. Some of the other signs and symptoms that are seen are:

• Easy bruising
• Nose bleed or epistaxis
• Gums bleeding
• Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract intermittently
• Red or purple spots on skin due to bleeding from small blood vessels under the skin
• Heavy menstrual flow in women
• Abnormal excessive bleeding after injury or surgery
• Too much bleeding after giving birth to the child

There are some symptoms which can be seen in patients rarely with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia

• Bleeding in the head leading to headache, dizziness, pain in neck or unconsciousness
• Bleeding in the joints
• Bleeding the GIT causing black stool color, vomiting consist of blood

Glanzmann's thrombasthenia can be differentiated from other bleeding disorders like Hemophilia A and B as in the former there is more mucocutaneous bleeding while in later there tends to occur muscle or joint bleeding more commonly.

CAUSES

Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is an inherited bleeding disorder which occurs due to inheritance of a mutated gene in autosomal recessive pattern. It affects both males and female equally. Both the parents of such patients are carrier of a recessive abnormal gene that is transferred during fertilization and the child presents the syndrome with full flashed symptoms.

DIAGNOSIS

Initially on noticing the abnormal bleeding by the doctor, patient is advised to go for the tests determining the time of clotting, i.e. Prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time. These tests help to know the exact time the plasma of the person takes to clot. However these tests shows the increased time in person suffering from Glanzamann's thrombasthenia. Hence, patient is suggested to go for Platelet functional assay which shows the complete detail of platelets function and abnormalities present in it. At last the test used to confirm this syndrome is Flow cytometry.
