World Liver Day : Understand your liver, Prevent it from disease

Human Liver is the second largest organ in the body and thus is a master player of our digestive system. Whatever we consume from food, to liquid, to medicine, everything passes through our liver. It is one of the most important parts of our body and thus is more prone to diseases.

According to the results published by World Health Organization, Liver Disease has now become the 10th leading cause of death in India.

On this World Liver Day, we want to make majority of people aware about the major cause of liver diseases, along with their symptoms and the necessary preventive measure one can take to keep their liver disease free.

We cannot survive without our liver and if proper care is not given then it can easily get damaged. Presently, no specific cure has been found which can treat the severe liver disease.

  • According to the data published in the year 2014 by WHO, deaths due to liver disease in India has reached to 216,865 or 2.44% of total deaths.
  • As per WHO, liver disease is the 10th most common cause of death in India
  • On an average one in 5 Indian is affected with liver disease
  • Presently, liver cirrhosis is the 14th leading cause of deaths in the world and will be going to be the 12th leading cause of deaths by the end of 2020.
  • Nearly 10 lakh patients are being diagnosed with liver cirrhosis every year in India
  • Due to malignancy in the world, Liver cancer or Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the second most common cause of death.

  • Can be genetic or inherited
  • Unhealthy life style and irregular eating patterns
  • Infections such as Hepatitis A, B and C
  • Excessive intake of high cholesterol foods and alcoholic drinks
  • High body mass index, which is generally associated with type 2 diabetes risk
  • Obesity

Various symptoms of liver disease and cancer:

  • Sudden loss of weight
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Vomiting and feeling of nausea
  • General weakness and fatigue
  • Constant pain in the upper abdomen
  • Enlargement of liver (hepatomegaly)
  • Swelling in the abdomen (ascites)
  • Enlargement of spleen

Preventive methods to keep your liver disease free and healthy:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Adopt a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet
  • Add more quantity of fiber in your diet by including fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread, rice and cereals.
  • To avoid the infection of Hepatitis A, B and C, make sure you are going for safe blood transfusion.
  •  Try to maintain personal hygiene and wash your hands after using the washroom.
  • Avoid alcohol, tobacco and drugs as much as possible.
