AIDS – How to Protect Yourself

HIV AIDS

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome and is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV. Once the virus has entered your body, it can’t be completely removed. HIV makes your body weaker by gaining control over your immune system. It destroys the white blood cells that fight infection and make you more prone to serious infections and certain cancers.

Transmission

The highest concentration of HIV is found in only certain body fluids such as blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breast milk. HIV is most often transmitted by:

· unprotected sex with an infected person

· having contact with the blood of an infected person

· sharing drug needles

· mother to her baby during pregnancy or childbirth

It is very important to make a note of the fact that HIV doesn’t spread through casual contact including shaking hands, eating together, kissing, etc.

Symptoms

Flu-like illness including fever, chills, sore throat, rash, fatigue, muscle aches, mouth ulcers, or swollen lymph nodes may show up as the initial signs of HIV. These may come and go within a month or half. Severe symptoms may not emerge until months or years later.

The best way to confirm the condition is to go for a blood test. Your health care provider can do the test, or you can use a home testing kit.

Treatment

What makes this condition so severe is that there exists no cure for it. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled and it’s progression can be slowed down. Antiretroviral therapy or ART is the best known Treatment for HIV and if taken the right way, ART can keep them healthy, prolong their lives, and lower their chance of infecting others to a great extent.

“Time has come to move forward to ensure that all children start their lives free from HIV that young people and adults grow up and stay free from HIV and that treatment becomes accessible so that everyone stays AIDS free.
