How children affect television

Every day our children spend hours and hours in front of a screen .

The mobile, the tablet and the Television in Children can have negative consequences for their emotional and cognitive development.

Find out more in this article.

Television in children is counterproductive

It is true that parents do not have time to dedicate 100% of attention to their children and therefore, in many cases, they give them the mobile or the tablet from the first moment they can grab objects with their own hands.

And not to mention when they are placed in front of the television when they only have a few weeks to live.

The use of these devices can be good or bad , according to certain parameters. For example, the age of the child, the number of hours spent in front of them, the distance from their eyes to the Screen, the other activities they do, etc.

It can seem great for adults that children stay static in front of an electronic device for hours while they perform other tasks. But to what extent is this beneficial for children?

  • From a young age we became big consumers of television programs.
  • Especially today there are exclusive channels for children who spend cartoons 24 hours a day.
  • Also in most houses each room has its device, including that of the baby. There is no shortage either in the kitchen or in the living room.

Harmful effects of television on children

As always, everything depends on the dose that small children have of this device.

It is not the same that only watch television one hour per day to spend the whole weekend in front of the screen.

The risks of excessive use of this device are many to leave them aside:

1. Reduce the moments of sharing with the family

Breakfast or dinner are usually the meals in which we can all sit down together and enjoy the company.

Unfortunately, television is a member of modern families and avoids communication.

  • Being dinner with the screen at full volume does not allow anyone to tell about their day, prevents attention to food ingested, favors fights over who has the remote control, etc.

2. Isolates from the environment

From a very young age, children know how to turn on the television and change the channels. This makes them so independent that parents never know what they are watching or doing.

In front of the screen it is as if the small one does not exist . And this is not good, because it isolates it from what happens around it.

You can have hundreds of toys, visits or your dog wanting to take a walk … but you will not notice because your eyes and your mind will be focused on that luminous box.

3. Eliminate the games

Unlike previous generations, today’s kids do not know how to play. Actually they do, but as long as it is with a technological device in front of them.

In the past there were marbles, balls, hiding, jump rope … and although they have many toys, they will not pay attention because there is something brighter than the “flame”: the screens.

  • With television children do not share their hours with siblings, cousins, neighbors or friends.
  • When the light is off or they are on vacation they do not know how to entertain themselves if they do not have a mobile phone with internet or a tablet with downloaded games.
  • The little ones relate less and less with children of their age and share less with their relatives.

4. Kill creativity

Another negative effect of television on children is that this device inhibits the ability to think for themselves.

Unlike a book, which allows them to “let the imagination fly”, on the screen the characters, stories or environments are already well detailed.

That is to say that the little one will not have to think about what his favorite superhero would look like, because he is seeing it with all the details.

And, since he does not play (either alone or with other children), he has lost (or better said, has not developed) the ability to imagine stories or situations with his toys.

For example put together a fort with soldiers, take care of a doll, organize a car race, etc. All that seems to have been left in the previous generation.

5. Causes poor grades

One of the harmful effects of television on children as of school age is that they do not pay attention in the classroom or to teachers.

The so-called “attention deficit” is not an invention but a problem that schools and parents must face on a daily basis.

As they are already accustomed to a continuous bombardment of lights, sounds and colors, it is very difficult for them to focus when someone is teaching them something in a “traditional” way .

The schools are trying to change the way to carry out the classes with multimedia content for children to learn.

On the other hand the fact of having everything “served on a platter” to do the homework (because everything is on the internet) reduces the possibility that the student actually forms.

In addition we must eliminate the myth that “educates television”. Certain content can help you, such as documentaries, but most of the programs that children watch do not have didactic content.
