This is what is inside an energy drink

Promoted by pointing out its virtues to reduce fatigue and/or be an excellent source of Energy (in fact its name alludes to that), perhaps for this reason, many confuse them with sports drinks. However, they are created for sporting purposes or have excellent nutrients for energy, we then tell you what really is in an energy drink.

The nutritional contribution of different energy drinks

Depending on the brand, the contribution of nutrients or ingredients may vary, but you must bear in mind is that in different quantities, these drinks offer sugar, caffeine, taurine, water and in some cases, vitamins and/or minerals added.

Neither is a natural drink, but they are created industrially and therefore, nutrients vary from a trademark to another. In the following table you can see the nutritional contribution for every 100 ml of energy drinks popular in Spain:

Bebidas Calorías Azúcar Sodio Cafeína
Monster Energy 48 Kcal 11 g 80 mg 32.5 mg
Monster Lo-carb 9 Kcal 1.4 g 80 mg 30 mg
Red Bull 45 Kcal 11 g 80 mg 32 mg
Red Bull Zero 4 Kcal 0 g 0.04 mg 19 mg
Rockstar 59 Kcal 14 g 0 mg 64mg
Burn 60 Kcal 14.5 g 0.04 mg 36.8 mg
Burn Zero 2 Kcal 0 g 0.05 mg 36.8 mg
Missile 45 Kcal 11 g 0.19 mg 30 mg

As you can see, except the versions without sugar, the rest have similar contribution of sugars than a traditional soft drink with the addition of possessing stimulants of the central nervous system such as caffeine and taurine in high proportions.

A can of an energy drink can then have equal or more caffeine than a cup of coffee and a quantity of sugar exceeding 50 grams.

Of course, they are not recommended drinks to achieve a balanced diet, because with only a can we overcome the who recommendation not to exceed 5% of the calories a day in the form of sugar.

Few vitamins and many empty calories

On the other hand, their intake of vitamins is minimal and they almost do not possess other nutrients as energy source, but that most of the calories derived from sugar and there are few. For this reason, an energy drink is not recommended to consume on a regular basis and less even in quantities which are sold (250 to 500 ml).

Although they are promoted as a solution against fatigue or as an excellent source of energy, we need to know that they are not more than calories empty and of poor quality, us not moisturize but can produce the opposite effect in our body and therefore to obtain energy and not get tired, nothing better than a healthy and varied diet as well as drinking enough water to get a proper hydration.
