What is linen and why is it sustainable?
Linen is actually not a new textile–it dates back to around 8,000 BCE when Egyptians used it as a means of currency–and it has long been heralded as one of the most sustainable textiles around. Linen is made from flax plant fibers, which are harvested and eventually spun and woven into the fabric that can be used to make clothing, sheets, and even soap. Whereas plants like cotton require a substantial amount of water (and often pesticides), flax plants require very little water and chemicals to thrive. Moreover, flax can be easily introduced to crop rotation cycles, which prevents harmful soil depletion (and, by extension, doesn’t disrupt biodiversity). Oh, and it’s completely biodegradable. #micdrop
Why should I wear linen?
Besides the points mentioned above, linen is becoming a popular fabric because of its durability and versatility. Linen is very strong, so you can wear it for years without so much as a tear. It can also withstand high temperatures, making it a perfect fabric for your summer vacay or a relaxing day at the beach.
One of linen’s major selling points is that it’s one of few textiles known to improve with age, so the more you wear and wash it, the softer and cozier it gets.
Now, you might be wondering, “Doesn’t linen wrinkle a lot?” The answer is yes, it does. That might be a deal breaker for some who like their clothes smooth and crisp, but I happen to prefer the “lived-in” look quite a bit. And if you’re really concerned, you can always run an iron over the item before you head out the door.
