Neck, Shoulder Pain & Headaches.

Kieran has treated thousands of stiff, sore, tense neck and shoulders and associated headaches over the years and often getting quick results. It’s not uncommon for Kieran to see someone who has seen up to half a dozen other health professionals with minimal results and only after a few treatments the chronic neck and Shoulder pain has been resolved. The number one reason why most people don’t respond to most treatments is because the postural muscles haven’t been released. A 10 minute chiropractic treatment is useless when it comes to chronic Muscle tension. similarly all the stretching and strengthening will have little effect, sometimes it will aggravate it.

I cannot over emphasise to role of the muscles when it comes to chronic neck and Shoulder Pain and headaches. The sore, tense, tiredness you feel is actually tight and locked up postural muscles, where even the role of holding and supporting your neck, shoulders and head is enough to fatigue them.

A good way to test this yourself is to run you fingers across the muscles on either side of your neck, do they feel “gristly” and “crunchy” as your fingers flick over the tense muscles like a guitar string. What about the the muscles on top of your shoulders, do they feel soft and relaxed or like concrete? Is there a big knot or lump on top of your shoulder blade? Roll your shoulder back and down and forward in a circular motion, can you hear the tight muscles as the flick over your shoulder blades?

There are dozens of muscles that may be involved in neck and shoulder pain, tension in one area will almost always distribute tension to other muscles of the neck, shoulders, upper back, between the shoulder blades and all the way down to the lower back. The body would rather be generally tense everywhere rather than just have one or two muscles that are extremely tight in isolation. I will provide a “shopping list” of the most important postural muscles, if you’re getting treatment and they’re only focusing on the site of pain, it’ll probably just as effective a MUCH cheaper to take over the counter pain relief and use a heat pack.

Also be wary of so called “posture experts” who don’t treat the postural muscles. In my experience professionals who treat posture use it more as a marketing technique, people are more likely to pay $80-$100 for a 10 minute treatment under the guise of having their posture corrected. Although all muscles have a role in posture, I have listed muscles that are particularly involved in forward head posture.

Trapezius or "traps"

Levator Scapula

Splenius Capitis

Suboccipitals (forward head posture)

sternocleidomastoid or SCM (Forward head posture)

Erector Spinae
