The best way to Workout is to remove the word “work” from it and replace it with “fun”. The moment you start having fun in something, do you ever take a break from it ? Do you ever stop doing it? The answer is NO. Let’s talk about various ways through which you can add an element of fun into your exercises and at the same time shed those extra calories.
1. Set small goals
Although “goals” sounds like too serious but it is one of the best ways to make your workout fun. You should set goals for yourself as these keep you motivated and focused. Track your progress based on these goals and when you achieve it, make sure you celebrate it. With celebrate I mean book a spa or a body massage instead of going out for drinks and junk food. 🙂
2. Experiment new fitness formats
These days gyms are not only about treadmills and dumbbells rather there is a full-fledged menu card with various offerings to suit everyone’s interest and requirement. You can switch your routine every time you feel bored with the current one. Let’s discuss a few of them here, people who like dancing can opt for Zumba (Dance to great music and burn a ton of calories), Yoga( it is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices originated in India), Pilates( It has series of movements that help in stabilizing and strengthening the core), Nirvana Fitness( it is a unique blend of uplifting positive music, simple to follow pilates/yoga toning exercises and breathing to detox mind and body), CrossFit( it is a strength and conditioning program) and many more.
3. Select colourful attire to workout
Remember the first time you went for athletic shopping and couldn’t take your eyes off the colours like black and grey. But its time when you should start picking up bold colours for your workout this will boost your confidence, which is true even outside the gym. The next time you go for shopping look for good patterns, colours that suit your skin tone and at the same time these clothes should not hamper your movement.
4. Find out a workout buddy
Humans are a social species, we love to do activities in a group more than individually. This also explains the popularity of the group fitness classes. Working out in group also helps you stick to your exercise goals. You can have a group of friends, your spouse, or any acquaintances at your gym workout together and make your workout more fun.
5. Workout in open
Once a while it’s good to ditch your gym and workout in open its any day better than running on a treadmill inside four walls. Also working out in open helps reduce depression and tension and at the same time makes you feel fresher and energised. You can consider walking/ running, playing outdoor games, cycling, swimming or hiking in outdoors.
6. Try different props
What comes to your mind when I say use props for your workout ? Is it only gym equipments like electronic machines and dumbbells. if yes then you need to upgrade yourself with the knowledge of the various props that can be used to make your workout more fun. To name a few of them – body weight, kettle bells, medicine ball, stepper, trampoline, rope, elastic bands, Hula-hoop, chair, water bottles etc. These props are a mix of options available at both gym and in your house. My personal favourite prop these days is a chair because you find this prop everywhere; your house, office, hotel (if you are off for a vacation) etc. I shall elaborate a few workouts that you can do using a chair in my next article.
7. Add some funk in your workout with music
Music acts as a good and fun motivator while working out. You can start your session with a warm up on an upbeat, energetic and a medium intensity music, continue with the high intensity music for your cardio exercises or modulate the intensity of songs as per your workout schedule and then bring the intensity down to wrap up your workout with a cool down session/ stretches. Keep changing your playlist to keep your workout interesting.
