BEFORE I DOVE into medical school, I had a part time job in a dermatology office where I saw hundreds of women pay thousands of dollars to get Botox and fillers shot into their faces. With the invincibility and naiveté of a twenty something, just barely of legal drinking age, I could not grasp the logic of paying all that money for a so-called lunchtime procedure in order to have poison injected into your face. Almost a decade later, I find myself in their shoes voluntarily listening to a spiel on forehead lines and crow’s feet during a derm consult. I’m all about aging gracefully, but really what difference does it make if you enhance the process in your favor? Just to be clear, botox is a neurotoxin, literally deadly in large quantities (but like my dermatologist said ever so eloquently, so is water).
