Obesity has become one of the most serious health problems worldwide. People that are obese routinely also suffer from heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, asthma, and hypertension, to name just a few. Obesity therefore places a serious burden on the health care system. In addition, obese people find it very difficult to lead a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle because they cannot move around without pain or discomfort. However, with bariatric of Alabama some patients can be helped to lose a substantial amount of weight.

Surgeons do not perform this surgery on demand. They first assess their patients and they will not even considering scheduling an operation within six months of first seeing the patient. During this time the patient must make some changes in his life and sometimes these changes are dramatic. Only when the surgeon is satisfied that the patient has indeed made the required changes will he schedule the actual operation.

Patients find the preparation time difficult because they have to completely change the way they look at life. Many surgeons advise their patients to see a therapist to help them become highly motivated to not only loose the weight, but to make sure it stays lost forever. Unless patients achieve a complete change of mindset the surgery will not be of any use whatsoever.

Some patients are rejected out of hand. If they used nicotine products during the six months prior to consulting the surgeon, they will be rejected. This is because smokers are prone to developing blood clots after completion of the surgery and this can result in serious complications. Once a potential patient has stopped smoking for six months he can consult the surgeon once more. Alcohol is another taboo because it can cause the blood sugar levels to become unstable.

Most surgeons require their patients to lose some weight before the operation is scheduled. Patients therefore has to make immediate and sometimes drastic changes to their diet. They have to eat protein three times a day and they have to give up sugar and caffeine. If they cannot stick to a strict eating plan or if they fail to lose at least some weight the surgeon may be hesitant to proceed.

Another requirement from patients is to start exercising. Activities such as hiking, swimming and cycling are all low impact exercises that can help the patient to get fit. Exercise will also improve the muscle strength of the patient and his overall flexibility. This will contribute towards the success of the operation itself and will shorten the recovery time. Exercise also increase the serotonin levels, which makes people feel good.

Weight loss procedures are serious surgical interventions. Patients must expect that they will be bruised for a while and that they may experience mild to severe discomfort. They may also find it painful to walk and bend. Thankfully, these side effects will disappear after a few weeks. For the first two weeks after surgery, the patient must avoid all forms of solid food.

Obese people must never think that surgery is an easy way in which to lose weight. This is certainly not the case. Surgeons will require patients to prepare for at least six months and to clearly show that they are motivated to lose weight permanently. For those that succeed, however, this procedure can be life altering.
