The MatrixCare UX Design Philosophy

At Matrixcare, we understand how important ongoing product development, optimization and modernization are to the people and organizations that use our services every day. With that in mind, I’m going to take you through a multi-part series on the philosophy of our user experience (UX), and the UX design philosophy behind the industry’s leading EHR system.

The MatrixCare UX design philosophy: From empathy to ideation

At MatrixCare, our UX philosophy is based on the design thinking methodology. In this method, the first step is Empathy, or designing based on emotional knowledge of and empathy for the end user. The next step in design thinking is ideation — or applying that observation and information to come up with bright and creative ideas.

Ideation is the collaboration of a cross-sectional group of people to get a fuller range of input. That means nurses and caregivers, of course, but it also means our clients, and key members of our own internal team — people who have been through the process repeatedly, as well as those who are looking at it with new eyes.

And for this to work, everyone on our team understands that empathy is the priority. That applies not only to designers and the UX team, but every corner of our organization, from product management to leadership and everyone in between.

We know our job is ultimately to support the people who use our systems to provide patient care. And by understanding their drive and their motivation with empathy, we’re able to design better systems, and adapt more readily to changing times.

Why empathy is at the heart of the MatrixCare UX design philosophy

By being empathetic in our approach, we’re making a deliberate effort to connect with users to understand their needs and observe their subconscious behavior while engaging with their environment and our systems. This helps us design solutions that our users can interact with instinctively, effectively and with as little frustration or delay as possible.

And by giving nurses and caregivers the freedom to use the device of their choice, we’re not only supporting efficiency but even helping to create those intangible emotional connections that create moments of delight for the users. We know how hard these folks are working, and what they’ve experienced during the pandemic. If we can help them by making their work experience better, then we take it as our responsibility to do so.

By making sure that the MatrixCare technology that nurses and clinicians use every day is as user friendly as possible, we’re also helping them avoid common mistakes as they work in an often-difficult emotional state. Because we empathize with these users, we understand how we can help them do their jobs with a minimum of error, stress or frustration.

And we nurture that empathy by spending time with those users, by observing and shadowing the people who use our systems — the nurses and caregivers who are at the heart of patient care. And I’ll explore just how we do that in the next post in this series.

In the meantime, you can learn more about how our platform can help your organization better meet today’s challenges .
