What You’ll Need for Homemade Playdough

Playdough is so simple to make at home, you’ll never buy the smelly store type again.

Likely, you have all the necessary materials already in your kitchen:

  • 2 cups of plain flour
  • 2 cups of warm water
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 2 tbsp of vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp of tartar (optional)
  • Food coloring or liquid watercolors
  • Mixing bowl
  • Saucepan

Not only this homemade playdough is softer and smoother than a store bought one, but also it doesn’t start to dry out, even if it’s played with all day.

How to Make Diy Playdough

Once you’ve got the items from the list above, proceede as follow:

  1. Combine all the ingredients together. The tartar is optional, but it makes this playdough last 6 months or longer.
  2. Stir over a low heat. The dough will begin to thicken and resemble mashed potato.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat when the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center.
  4. Allow the dough to cool.
  5. Cook the dough longer if it’s still sticky. Keep stirring and cooking till it dries up.
  6. Store this dough in plastic bags or sealed container.

To put a fresh spin on your playdough, add in a packet of Kool-Aid powder. It’ll smell like cherries, grapes, oranges, or strawberries.

Also, for a galactic take on this recipe, stir in some glitters and a few drops of glycerin. It’ll sparkle and shine more than ever.
