Montenegro: A Destination On The Rise

As a new year begins, people around the world are planning their getaways for 2018 – and one up-and-coming European Destination on many tourists’ map is Montenegro.

Known as the pearl of the Mediterranean, the star of the Adriatic was once a haunt of Hollywood royalty, drawing the rich and famous to its 293km of beautiful coastline. From beaches to mountains, the rich and varied landscapes are once again becoming a popular go-to for holidaymakers and holiday home owners, with luxurious new properties available at a fraction of the cost of Italy or France.

The country’s gorgeous scenery and fascinating history are helping to make Montenegro a budget Riviera for 21st century tourists. And they are increasingly flocking to the area: according to official figures, the number of visitors to Montengero jumped 20 per cent year-on-year in October 2017, following a 14 per cent increase in September 2017. European citizens accounted for the majority of visitors, particularly those from Serbia, Germany and Albania.

Part of the Bay of Kotor, the peninsula of Lustica is perfectly positioned for this growing number of international visitors. One of the few places on the Adriatic coast that has been less developed, it is a beach lover’s dream, with sandy spots still tucked away that are not crowded with tourists. Lustica Bay is nestled on the coast in the north western bay of Traste, close to the village of Radovici. With 240 days of sunshine every year, it boasts a diverse mix of olive groves, sloping hills and crystal-clear blue waters. The bay is only 15 minutes’ drive from Tivat and Kotor, with three international airports nearby offering direct flights across Europe.

At the heart of this new development’s rising appeal is Centrale, Lustica Bay’s town centre. Fully integrated and sustainable, it combines outstanding indigenous architecture with first-class amenities, such as spas, restaurants and bars, plus medical facilities and shopping centres. The star leisure attraction will be an 18-hole Gary Player signature golf course. Montenegro’s first 18-hole championship golf course, it will be designed with precision and passion by the internationally renowned Gary Player, a pro golfer and Global Ambassador of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Lustica Bay recently welcomed the Prime Minister of Montenegro for the first time to see work begin on the course. Top journalists from around the world were also in attendance, as the development begins to draw attention from overseas.

Residences vary from studios to three bedroom apartments, covering 45 to 110 square metres of space. Large, airy windows take full advantage of the scenery, while comfortable living areas are planned to make the best use of space with connected kitchen and dining zones. The rooms flow naturally into balconies, open terraces and courtyards, allowing owners to luxuriate in the year-round, Mediterranean sunshine.

Each area is designed to be seamlessly integrated with the natural environment. The resort’s Southern Central area is host to Festival Piazza, a multi-purpose town square, while the historic remains of the on-site Austro-Hungarian coastal fortification will become a public space and viewing platform. The gateway will form a stunning pedestrian access route, while subterranean spaces will be used for souvenir shops and bars.

The result is a resort that places the focus firmly on showcasing its surroundings. With investors also benefiting from favourable tax laws and low property prices, its developers are confident it will put Montenegro on the map for 2018.
