1. History of Nigerian Independence Day

The port of Lagos started due to the trading of Nigerians with the explorers from Spain and Portugal in the 16th century. The British expansion in the region started in the late 19th century via the Royal Niger Company.

In 1900 the Southern Nigeria Protectorate was formed to be combined with the Northern Nigeria Protectorate in 1914 to create the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, the prototype of today’s Nigeria.

However, in the middle of the 20th century, the decline of the British Empire led to Nigeria’s independence proclaimed on 1 October 1960. The constitution gave three regions of Nigeria a certain degree of autonomy.

Nigeria became absolutely independent from Britain on 1 October 1963 with the new constitution and the first president Nnamdi Azikiwe.
