7 Top Tips for Saving Energy in your Home on a Budget

We all know the big money Saving tips when it gets to saving energy in the house, like making sure lofts are insulated and the benefits of double glazing - but if you have these done already, or don't have funds right now for a big change here are some small ones that can definitely help you feel the benefit!

Top Tip Number 1 - Extra Spin on Your Washing

Most washing machines now have an extra spin function, what you may not have thought of is putting loads through an extra spin after the normal cycle is finished.

The extra spin cycles are usually quite short - around 15 minutes, but that extra spin means that extra moisture comes out of the clothes. Meaning that if you use a dryer - the clothes will be done much quicker - reducing power used by the dryer (dryers usually use more power than washing machines) or it still works wonders if you dry clothes on a line or on a clothes horse - because they dry that much quicker!

Top Tip Number 2 - Shut the doors, & find a cute draught excluder

Ok at the risk of sounding like my dad, keeping the doors shut when you are in a room really does make a difference. Heat will naturally rise in the house, and keeping the heat in the room you are using can make the world of difference.

Also making sure doors fit the frame well, and with so many cute door ones about it's not only practical but can add to your rooms décor.

Cooling and heating a house is the activity that uses the most electricity usually in your house, so it's an important one to watch as it will make the most difference.

Top Tip Number 3 - Window Seals

Check your window seals! While replacing windows is expensive, and sometimes can't be done easily, checking the seals around your windows is the best idea to make sure that there are no gaps/old sealant that is letting in cold air and making your house loose heat.

You can't get a tube of window sealant remover, to remove the old sealant, and a new tube of sealant from your local DIY store, and is a thankfully simple task. If you are not sure on the technique to put down the new sealant - then be sure to take a quick look on YouTube, as there are plenty of instructional videos - with do's and don'ts.

Top Tip Number 4 - Timers of all Types

From things being left on (standby or not), to heating, and hot water system timers they all make a difference!

Get your heating and hot water system planned around your day and get the timer programmed. Adjusting the times of when everything turns on

can not only make it nicer (who doesn't want their heating to come on ready for when they get home) but also means it doesn't get turned on sporadically then accidentally left on.

Getting handy with timers on plugs - for lights, appliances, even things like chargers if you are unlikely to remember to unplug them or forget things are charging they can reduce your bills without even thinking about it!

Top Tip Number 5 - Tumble Dryer Tricks

Back on the cost of washing our clothes - if you do use a tumble dryer - using dryer balls help reduce the drying time of each load.

Dryer balls usually made of felted wool - you simply pop them in the load with your laundry, and they help create space between your clothes as they are drying - meaning the hot air moves around your clothes better and so dries them quicker.

Top Tip Number 6 - Old Appliances

Check any old appliances, and think about upgrading them if they use a lot of power.

We did this recently - we had a 10 year old flat screen TV, it was on its last legs so we got a new replacement. But until we got the new one in, I didn't realise how much electricity the old one was using in comparison to new designs, and also how much heat it generated. Obviously you have to take into consideration the cost of upgrading, but appliances that are constantly running - like your fridge, or frequently used items like your washing machine or television can soon add up!

Top Tip Number 7 - Boiling the kettle with too much water

It's no surprise that whether it's tea or coffee (or hot chocolate for that matter!) as a nation we all love a brew. But the amount of water in the kettle can make a big difference!

Kettles use a lot of power when they are boiling water - but most people wouldn't think about them because they are only running for such a short period of time. However most people put more water than they need in them each time they are boiled - meaning that water is getting heated - when it’s not needed.

Chances are you'll need to re-boil it for your next brew so putting more than what you need at the time is a good way to reduce the energy being used.
