Black History Month at Poplar Union – October 2022

By Fahiza Danjuma, Social Media Manager, Poplar Union

This Black History Month, Poplar Union are thrilled to celebrate Black excellence with a series of events running throughout October to honour the local Black artists, makers, and facilitators as they kick off #PUCelebratesBHM. Poplar Union are working with their community to be at the heart of these events looking at and celebrating black history, identity & politics through music, theatre, film, and interactive workshops.

Music

From Jazz, Reggae, and Blues to Hip-Hop and Soul, Black musicians have been innovators in their fields and shaped so much of the music we hear today. To honour the past, present, future and joy of Black music Poplar Union are hosting a free Friday Sessions special on Friday 14 October with local singer-songwriter and founder of Soul Cafe, Jordan O, with an evening showcasing new work from singer-songwriter, Kadi, and spoken word artist, Toyah Demi.

Theatre

Poplar Union are opening the doors to community creation, conversations, and celebration with Purple Moon Drama, showcasing Essentially Black, a new play from young writer Naomi Denny exploring what happens when race and elite universities collide. Pay what you feel on Wednesday 19 October.

Community support

Support and shop Black this October and don’t miss Poplar Union championing Black makers and artists with their free-to-attend Black-Owned Makers Market, where you will be able to discover and shop from small Black-owned businesses showcasing everything from clothing and accessories to health and beauty products. Join them on Sunday 30 October.

Poplar Union looks forward to celebrating the Black community and their experiences and stories this Black History Month and beyond.
