How to Work Remotely And Stay Sane in London

Guest post by Craig Daniel

It’s hardly a newsflash – the world has suddenly, over the past couple of years, adopted a Remote-first approach.

It would be fair to say that the initial reaction amongst employees was largely positive. After all, what’s better than rolling out of bed and into your workspace without a commute?

However, as time has progressed, it has soon become apparent that there are drawbacks, with mental health being the big one. Many people have found that remote work can get incredibly lonely – perhaps even more so if you’re based in the capital, where living spaces are notoriously smaller.

Bearing this in mind, we have penned today’s guide to go over some options that might help you as you work from home in London.

Make sure you take regular breaks

When you’re in an office, it’s easy to pop to the kitchen for a cup of tea or chat with a colleague for a few minutes, but these breaks can be harder to come by when you’re remote.

Make sure you schedule Regular Breaks – even if it’s just for ten minutes every couple of hours. Get up and move around, have a drink of water and take a few deep breaths. Not only will this help to keep you sane, but it’ll also help to keep you productive.

Do you have to ‘work from home’?

In other words, don’t take the phrase so literally. Sure, if you’re in remote meetings all day, every day, it probably makes sense to work from your own space. However, if not, why not consider working out and around London’s streets? Whether it’s over brunch at Covent Garden, or perhaps just even a coffee, throw yourself back into the real world.

Sure, you might not be interacting with people directly, but just seeing the ‘buzz’ of movement can help preserve your mental state and prove that you’re not alone. In fact, you’ll probably see countless other remote workers doing the same.

Join a co-working space

Similarly to above, a co-working space might be another option. It will be more expensive, but this might also provide an excellent platform to bounce ideas around similar people.

Again, it provides the ‘buzz’ of people, but perhaps in a more targeted setting, which will work better for some of you.

Do you have a long-term plan?

This is a question that we should all be asking ourselves, but it’s especially pertinent when it comes to remote work.

Are you in a situation where you can see yourself doing this long-term? If the answer is no, it might be time to reconsider your remote setup. After all, working from home can be incredibly isolating, and it’s easy to become demotivated if you’re not seeing the fruits of your labour.

Having an end goal is essential. Some of you might just be waiting for that call from your company to make that long-awaited return to the office. For others, this could well and truly be the new normal, and it’s here where you need to question your long-term ambitions and if this is truly sustainable for you.
